Howard taught at Indiana University from 1972 until 2006. For twenty-seven years he was Head of the Acting and Directing Program. While he acted in and directed plays from many periods, his area of expertise was Shakespeare.
As well as directing at IU, he directed Shakespeare at the Alabama, Oregon, and Utah Shakespeare Festivals. He worked for fifteen seasons at the Utah Shakespearean Festival, including the season when the festival was given the 2000 Tony Award for outstanding regional theatre. He also continued to act, on occasion, with the Indiana Repertory Theatre.
