Tom Shafer served asstaff dramaturg at the Department of Theatre and Drama from 1989 to 2014, coming to the department from Florida Southern College, where he served for 4 years as an instructor of theatre and director. As dramaturg, he helped select the season, provide research support for previously produced plays, helps develop new work, write essays for programs, web pages, and Theatre Circle Insights, the newsletter for the department's donor group, which he also edited. He also managed some sections of the department's web site. He supported fifteen productions a year at the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center and the Indiana Festival Theatre.

He is a member of the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas and has presented papers and coordinated sessions at that organizations conferences. Within the Bloomington community, he has served as a member of the Board of School Trustees for the Monroe County Community School Corporation and as a member of the board of directors for the Bloomington Playwrights Project.
