People of the Production

Fontaine Syer (Director) is an associate professor in acting and directing, joining the Department of Theatre and Drama in fall 2005. She has worked as an actor and director in regional theatres for nearly 30 years. Most recently, she was Artistic Director of Delaware Theatre Company in Wilmington. From 1992-96, she served as Associate Artistic Director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she acted/directed each season. She was also co-founder and Artistic Director of Theatre Project Company in St. Louis, MO, from 1975-1989. Syer has worked as a free-lancer in theatres across the country, including the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Pennsylvania Centre Stage, Meadowbrook Theatre in Michigan, and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. She Stoops to Conquer is Fontaine's debut production in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center.

Dathan Powell (Scenic Designer) is a third-year M.F.A. scenic design student who did his undergraduate work at Illinois Wesleyan University. At IU Dathan has been scenic designer for Macbeth, Pal Joey, Bat Boy, The Laramie Project, and The Alien from Cincinnati, as well as props master for Jacques Brel…. Professionally, he has scenic designed The New Jersey Book of the Dead at Bloomington Playwrights' Project and Black Comedy at Illinois Wesleyan and was scenic artist for the 2005 Brown County Playhouse production of Greater Tuna. Other professional credits include assistant scenic designer and scene painter for The Music Man (Young Abe Lincoln Amphitheater), assistant scenic designer for Hair and The Triumph of Love, the latter winning a Meritorious Award from ACTF, and IATSE entertainment technician for Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. Also at IWU, Dathan designed Christopher Durang's Titanic, and Glory in the Flower. Most recently Dathan worked as scenic designer and scenic artist/set carpenter for the Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake, NY. Seagle Music Colony shows included: Don Giovanni (scenic designer and scenic artist); The Most Happy Fella, Ariadne auf Naxos, and South Pacific (scenic artist and carpenter). He is from Bloomington, Illinois.

Linda Pisano (Costume Designer) heads the costume design program in the Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama and directs the Theatre Study Abroad program in London. Her designs at IU include Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Bacchai. She has been on the faculties at Iowa State University and Kenyon College. A member of the United Scenic Artists Local 829, Linda's work has covered a broad range of theatre, dance, musical theatre, ballet and experimental theatre. She has twice been a National Jury winner with the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) and invited to exhibit her work at the Quadrennial World Design Expo in Prague. She is a three-time winner of the Peggy Ezekiel Award for Excellence in Design. Linda regularly designs with such companies as the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Indiana Repertory Theatre, BalletMet Columbus, Lyric Repertory Theatre, Contemporary American Theatre Company, Grandparents Living Theatre, and many others. Several of her ballet designs continue to tour through Canada, England, and South Africa, as well as throughout the United States.  She received her M.F.A. in costume design from The Ohio State University in 1996 and an M.A. in theory and B.F.A. in acting/directing from Utah State University.

Gregory C. Brenchley (Lighting Designer) is a third year M.F.A. Lighting Design student who did his undergraduate work at Utah State University. At IU he has been the Lighting Designer for Falsettos, Scarlet Letter, Happy Birthday, Wanda June, and The Alien From Cincinnati. Elsewhere, Greg has worked as the Lighting Designer for The Odd Couple (The New Harmony Theatre), Vanities, Working, Bocon, and The Last Night of Ballyhoo (Utah State University). He has also worked as Assistant Lighting Designer for the Utah Festival Opera Company for the entire 2003 Season. Brenchley has worked as a Master Electrician for A Moon to Dance By and As Thousands Cheer for The New Harmony Theatre and The Odd Couple and The Foreigner for the Brown County Playhouse. Additionally, he worked as Production Coordinator for the Cache Valley Center for the Arts in 2003. Gregory is from American Fork, Utah.

 

Erik Friedman (Assistant Director) is a first-year M.F.A. directing student. He holds degrees in music from Butler University and DePaul University. He has worked extensively on the stage of the IU Opera Theatre, appearing in The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, and She Loves Me. Other opera experience includes the DePaul Opera Theatre production of Cosi fan tutte. This summer he made his Brown County Playhouse debut, playing Jack in The Importance of Being Earnest and made his IU theatre debut as Macduff in Macbeth. He has also worked at Actors Theatre of Louisville, playing James in Gold in this Light. Erik is from Oswego, Illinois.

Claire Diedrich (Stage Manager) is a sophomore majoring in theatre and drama. Claire's previous assistant stage manager credits at IU include The Scarlet Letter, Arcadia and Joining Forces. Claire also worked as a Production Intern at the Metropolis Performing Arts Center in Illinois. Claire is from Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Joyce Thompson (Assistant Stage Manager) is a junior majoring in both theatre and drama and English at IU. This is her first show as an Assistant Stage Manager. Joyce is from Corydon, Indiana.

Joshua Cooney (Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore majoring in theatre and drama at IU. This is his first show as an assistant stage manager. Josh is from Goshen, Indiana.

CAST

Michael Aguirre (Jeremy) is a freshman majoring in theatre education. This is his debut performance in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. Michael is from Elmhurst, IL.

Emily Chovanec (Pimple/Bar Maid) is a junior majoring in theatre and drama and art history. She is making Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center debut with this role. Other credits include Amanda in Family Portrait at The Bloomington Playwrights Project and Spoon River Anthology, Scapino!, and The Laramie Project at Oregon State University. Emily is from Corvallis, Oregon.

Tom Conner (Tony) is a second-year M.F.A. acting student who received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame. At IU he has been seen as Hally in Master Harold and the Boys, Yepikhodov in The Cherry Orchard, and Ross in Macbeth. While at Notre Dame he appeared in Arms and the Man (Bluntschi), The Glass Menagerie (Tom), Twelfth Night (Feste), The Mandrake (Callimaco), and many others. He worked two summers with Notre Dame Summer Shakespeare, appearing in A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest. Tom is from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Jeff Craft (Sir Charles) is a senior majoring in theatre and drama. This is his debut performance on the IU stage. Elsewhere he has appeared as Host of the Garter in Merry Wives of Windsor (Monroe County Civic Theatre) and as Henry Irving in The Actor's Nightmare (Hiwassee College). Jeff is from Lawrenceburg, IN.

Jacob Dahm (Dick Muggins/Roger) is a sophomore in the department of theatre and drama. Jacob was last seen in the IU main stage production of Macbeth. Credits elsewhere include Macbeth and She Loves Me at IPFW's Williams Theatre and Footloose and Crazy for You at the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre. He is from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Tara Goldsbrough (Bet Bouncer) Tara is a sophomore in the Department of Theatre and Drama. She is making her Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center debut with this role. Tara is from Kansas City, Missouri.

Chris Hatch (Landlord/Diggory) is a first-year Ph.D. student in theatre history, theory, and literature. He made his Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center debut last semester as Banquo in Macbeth. He received his B.A. from Penn State University and his M.F.A. in acting and directing from the University of Missouri – Kansas City. Regional theatre credits include Utah Shakespearean Festival, Kansas City Lyric Opera, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, First Folio Shakespeare Festival, and the Missouri Repertory Theatre. Chris is from State College, Pennsylvania.

 Tyler Hill (Aminadab/House Servant) is a senior in the Department of Theatre and Drama. He is making his IU main stage debut with this role. Tyler was last seen as William Kemp in A Cry of Players at the Waldron Arts Center. Tyler is from Bloomington, Indiana.

Holly Holbrook (Mrs. Hardcastle) is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in theatre and drama. At IU she has been seen in independent projects as Marya Vassylevna in Uncle Vanya and Maria Josefa in The House of Bernarda Alba. Last summer she appeared at the Brown County Playhouse as Miss Prism in The Importance of Being Earnest. Other roles include Lucille in The Cemetery Club with the Harlequin Dinner Theatre, Putana in Tis Pity She's a Whore, Bananas in House of Blue Leaves, Emma in Acrylic Emma, and Wife in Scenes by Harold Pinter. Holly hails from San Antonio, TX.

John Maness ( Hastings ) is a first-year M.F.A. directing student. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Memphis. Favorite roles include Hamlet in Hamlet (Theatre Memphis), The Abbé de Coulmier in Quills (Theatreworks), Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Theatreworks), and Mozart in Amadeus (Playhouse on the Square). He served as the assistant director on last semester's production of Arcadia and played the role of Duncan in Macbeth. John is from Memphis, TN.

Brendan Pentzell (Hardcastle) is a third-year M.F.A. student in Acting. He received his B.A. from Hillsdale College. At IU, Brendan has appeared as Master Brackett in The Scarlet Letter, Firs in The Cherry Orchard, Fred Fogarty in Last Days of the High Flier, Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet and Jellaby in last semester's production of Arcadia. He has also played Henry Moss in The Late Henry Moss for an independent student project, Roderigo in Othello for Knightsbridge, Donalbain/Doctor in Macbeth for Whitefire, and Mark Leigh in This Island's Mine for the Organic Theatre. Brendan's screen credits include High School Security Guard in 20th Century Fox's Roswell, a hillbilly on Comedy Central's Primetime Glick and in the film Silent No More. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and Actors Equity Association. She Stoops to Conquer is Brendan's thesis project. Brendan is from Toledo, Ohio.

Reneé Racan Rodríguez (Kate Hardcastle) hails from San Francisco, CA, and is a third-year M.F.A. student in the Department of Theatre and Drama. She received her B.A. from University of California, Santa Cruz, and trained also at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. While at IU, Reneé graced the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center stages in such roles as Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, Mina in Dracula, Penelope in Happy Birthday, Wanda June, Christina in Last Days of the High Flier, Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter and as Hannah Jarvis in last semester's production of Arcadia. She also played Bernarda Alba in the independent student production of The House of Bernarda Alba, and last summer was seen at the Brown County Playhouse as Blanche in Brighton Beach Memoirs. Kate is Reneé's M.F.A. thesis role.

Justine Salata ( Constance ) is a freshman majoring in theatre and drama. She made her Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center debut last semester as Chloe in Arcadia and also appeared as an ensemble member in Wit. Justine has been seen in a variety of roles including Sheila in Hair, Kim in Bye Bye Birdie and Cathy in The Last Five Years (Fieldston Theatre). Justine is from New York City.

Zachary Spicer (Jack Slang/House Servant) hails from Greencastle, Indiana and is a senior majoring in anthropology. Zachary has appeared in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center in Happy Birthday, Wanda June as Herb Shuttle and Arcadia as Captain Brice. He has also appeared in Fiddler on the Roof and The Glass Menagerie at the Putnum County Playhouse and as Greg in Bicentennial Babies at the Bloomington Playwrights Project.

Eric VanTielen (Marlow) is a second-year M.F.A. Acting student who received his B.F.A. from Utah State University. He has appeared in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center as Rev. Dimmesdale in The Scarlet Letter, Dr. Norbert Woodly in Happy Birthday, Wanda June, Van Helsing in Dracula and as Septimus Hodge in Arcadia. This summer he worked at the famed Utah Shakespearean Festival, appearing as Sir Lionel in Camelot and Envy in Howard Jensen's production of Dr. Faustus. Regionally, he has performed extensively at Pioneer Theatre Company, appearing in Evita, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Ragtime. He worked two seasons for Utah Festival Opera and three for the Old Lyric Repertory Company. In 2004 he was the first place winner of the Golden Key International Honour Society acting competition, and in 2005 he was the winner of the Bloomington National Society of Arts and Letters Drama competition, representing the area at the national contest in Hawaii. Eric hails from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Ryan Wells (Tom Twist/House Servant) is a junior majoring in theatre and drama. She Stoops to Conquer is Ryan's debut performance in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. Ryan has appeared as Pony in Suburbia, the Narrator in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Hinckley in Assassins with the University Players. He also appeared as Paco in the Union Board production of Man of La Mancha and Jack in The Boys Next Door. Ryan is from Charlestown, IN.
