The Cast

Nick Arapoglou and Lilia VasselevaNick Arapoglou (Reverend John Hale) is a senior majoring in Theatre and Drama.  He returns to the Ruth N. Halls Theatre after having played Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, Ezra Chater in Arcadia and most recently as Menteith in Macbeth.  Other IU credits include Laramie Project, Sheriff Reynolds in Batboy, Lucien in The Boys Next Door, Jamie in Credeaux Canvas and Bacchai.  Nick appeared in the 2006 Brown County Playhouse hit, The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged).  Nick is a recipient of an IU Theatre and Drama Merit Award. hails from Atlanta, Georgia.

Photo of John ArmstrongJohn R. Armstrong (John Proctor) is a third-year M.F.A. student in Acting who received his B.A. from Indiana University. The role of John Proctor serves as John’s M.F.A. thesis project. At IU he has appeared as Robert Sideway/Captain Collins in Our Country’s Good, Marvin in Falsettos, Ludlow Lowell in Pal Joey, Harold Ryan in Happy Birthday, Wanda June, Seward in Dracula, Leo Frank in Parade, the Pirate King in The Pirates of Penzance, and the Narrator/Mysterious Man in Into the Woods. At the Brown County Playhouse, John appeared as Sparky in the 2005 production of Forever Plaid and as Dennis Sanders in the 2006 production of Smoke on the Mountain. Most recently he was seen as Bill in the Premiere Musicals workshop performance of John Pielmeier's Slow Dance with a Hot Pickup in the Wells-Metz Theatre.  Elsewhere John has played Wickersham Brother and Understudy for the Cat in the Hat in the national tour of Seussical the Musical, David in Company and Gov. John Slaton in Parade for the Broward Stagedoor Theatre in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf in Into the Woods and Vince Fontaine in Grease with Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre.  John received the 2006 NSAL Chapter Award Musical Theatre as well as the 2005 Rosemary R. Schwartzel Scholarship from the Department of Theatre and Drama.  He is from Brownsburg , Indiana .

Michael Borgmann (Francis Nurse) is a junior majoring in both Theatre and Drama and Communication and Culture. Michael has appeared in the First Pres Theatre’s Biloxi Blues as James K. Hennessey, an IU independent production of As You Like It as Orlando, and the Bloomington Playwrights Project production of Farewell to Hollywood as Vincent.  Michael is from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Nick Arapoglou, Taylor St. John, Matt Leach, and Lindsey CharlesLindsey Charles (Tituba) is a senior majoring in Theatre and Drama with a minor in Studio Art. Lindsey last appeared in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center as Reverend Hightower/Bud in Batboy: The Musical. Other IU productions include Tommy (Hawker/Chorus), and The Rocky Horror Show (Magenta), both productions for University Players.  With the Bloomington Playwrights Project she appeared in Chicks With Dicks (Dixie), and Holy Spirit on Grand Avenue (Stephanie) and the Collins LLC productions of The OZ Variations (Colin Jorgensen), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Violet Beauregard), and Extremeties (Terry). Lindsey is from Terre Haute, Indiana.

Tom Conner (Giles Corey) is a third-year M.F.A. student in Acting who received his B.A. from the University of Notre Dame. At IU he has been seen as Tony in She Stoops to Conquer,Hally in “MASTER HAROLD”… and the Boys, Yepikhodov in The Cherry Orchard, and Ross in Macbeth. While at Notre Dame he appeared in Arms and the Man (Bluntschli), The Glass Menagerie (Tom), Twelfth Night (Feste), The Mandrake (Callimaco), and many others. He worked two summers with Notre Dame Summer Shakespeare, appearing in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest. Tom is from Salt Lake City, Utah

Jacob Dahm (Ezekiel Cheever) is a junior majoring in Theatre and Drama. Jacob was last seen in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center productions of Macbeth and She Stoops to Conquer. Credits elsewhere include Macbeth and She Loves Me at IPFW’s Williams Theatre and Footloose and Crazy for You at the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre. He is from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Anne Kerkian (Ann Putnam) a senior majoring in Theatre & Drama and English. The Crucible is her debut in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. Her credits at the Bloomington Playwrights Project include Celeste in Holy Spirit on Grand Ave, Cat in Five Pounds Blood, and Go-Go-Dancer in Chicks with Dicks). She appeared as The Creature in the Monroe County Civic Theatre production of Frankenstein. Other appearances include the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing… and as Featured Soloist in Godspell with the Genesis Theatre Project as well as the Machinal (John Waldron Art Center), Jabberwock (Ohio Valley Summer Theatre), and The House of Bernada Alba (independent student production). She is from Athens, Ohio.

Sarah Kiperman (Sarah Good) is a sophomore majoring in Theatre and Drama and Psychology with a minor in English. The Crucible is Sarah’s debut in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. Sarah appeared as Agnes in Meet Me in St. Louis (Bloomfield Players), Duffy in Annie, Mae Peterson in Bye Bye Birdie (JET Theatre) and the Munchkin Mayor in The Wizard of Oz (Marquis Theatre). Sarah is from West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Photo of Dan KremerDan Kremer (Deputy-Governor Danforth) Dan received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Southern Methodist University. In fourteen seasons with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, roles included Lambert LeRoux in Pravda, John in Oleanna, de Medici in The White Devil, Elomire in La Bete, Undershaft in Major Barbara, Prospero in The Tempest, Jaques in As You Like It, Duke in Measure for Measure, Oberon in Dream, and the premieres of The Majestic Kid and Emma’s Child.  Nationally, he has appeared with ACT Seattle, American Conservatory Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, Dallas Theater Center, Geva, McCarter, Milwaukee Rep, Missouri Rep, Playwrights Horizon, Portland Center Stage, Seattle Rep and Yale Rep. Mr. Kremer is author of THE CHASE, a stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s narrative poem Venus and Adonis. Mr. Kremer is a member of Actor’s Equity Association.

Matt Leach (Thomas Putnam) is a senior majoring in Telecommunications and Theatre and Drama. The Crucible is Matt’s debut performance in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. He is from Tampa, Florida.

Jamaal R. McCray (Herrick) is a junior majoring in Theatre and Drama. Last year he appeared in the Norvelle Center as a Soldier in Macbeth. Jamaal also appeared in Black Curtain productions of Can I Take You Out Tonight, Baby? as Cliff and Interpretation of the “Puerto Rican Obituaries” as a Poet. He was an assistant stage manager for IceBreaker at the Phoenix Theatre. Jamaal is from Indianapolis, Indiana.

Jessica Rothert and John R. ArmstrongJessica Rothert (Abigail Williams) is a senior majoring in Theatre and Drama and English. She has appeared in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center as Honor in Honour, Lady Croom in Arcadia and Lady Montague in Romeo and Juliet. She has performed in numerous independent student productions on campus, playing Poncia in The House of Bernarda Alba, Claire in Why is John Lennon Wearing a Skirt?, and Yelena in Uncle Vanya. Last winter she appeared in Julie D at the John Waldron Arts Center. She is the recipient of the 2005 National Society of Arts and Letters Borkenstein Memorial Award, and the 2005 Nota Scholl McGreevey Theatre and Drama Scholarship. Jessica is from Covington, Kentucky.

 

 

 

Dan Kremer and Justine SalataJustine Salata (Mary Warren) is a sophomore majoring in Theatre and Drama.  She made her Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center debut last year as Chloe in Arcadia and also appeared as an ensemble member in Wit and as Constance in She Stoops to Conquer.  Justine has been seen in a variety of roles including Sheila in Hair, Kim in Bye Bye Birdie and Cathy in The Last Five Years (Fieldstone Theatre).  Justine is from New York City.

Sarah Schlegel (Susanna Wilcott) is a freshman majoring in Theatre and Drama. The Crucible is Sarah’s debut in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. She is from Park Ridge, Illinois.

Graham Sheldon (Judge Hathorne) is a sophomore majoring in Telecommunications and Political Science. The Crucible is Graham’s debut in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. He is originally from Palm Harbor, Florida.

April Smallwood (Betty Parris) is a junior majoring in Theatre and Drama and Creative Writing. At IU she has appeared as Child Macduff in Macbeth, Viola in Twelfth Night for the IU Shakespeare Club. Elsewhere she has appeared as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. She is from Seymour, Indiana.   

Taylor St. John (Reverend Samuel Parris) is a freshman majoring in Theatre and Drama with an emphasis in Theatre Education. The Crucible is Taylor’s debut in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. He is originally from Coopersville, Michigan.

Lauren Steffan (Rebecca Nurse) is senior majoring in Theatre and Drama. Lauren recently performed at the BPP as Masha Vindicta in Farewell to Hollywood and as a Touring Actor/Director for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of The Tales of Hans Christian Anderson.  She also appeared as the Poet in Can You Hear Me Now? (Black Curtain Theatre Group), and Molly Keneflick in That Takes Ovaries (Collins LLC). Lauren is originally from Jasper, Indiana.

John R. Armstrong and Lilia VassilevaLilia Vassileva (Elizabeth Proctor) is a first-year M.F.A. student in Acting who received her B.A. from Valparaiso University. The Crucible is her debut in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. Most recently, Lilia lived and worked in Chicago where she was an ensemble member with Imagination Theatre. Chicago credits include Vera in And Then There Were None (Attic Playhouse), Beatrix in Writing Your Own Tragedy (Pegasus Players) and Elsa in out/SPOKEN  (About Face Youth Theatre). Lilia also played the role of Masha in The Seagull (Moscow Art Theatre School) in Boston, Massachusetts. Lilia is from Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Creative Team

Fontaine Syer (Director) is an Associate Professor in Acting and Directing, joining the Department of Theatre and Drama in fall 2005. She has worked as an actor and director in regional theatres for nearly 30 years. Most recently, she was Artistic Director of Delaware Theatre Company in Wilmington.  From 1992-96, she served as Associate Artistic Director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she acted/directed each season.  She was also co-founder and Artistic Director of Theatre Project Company in St. Louis, Missouri, from 1975-1989.  Syer has worked as a free-lancer in theatres across the country, including the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Pennsylvania Centre Stage, Meadowbrook Theatre in Michigan, and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. She Stoops to Conquer was Fontaine’s debut production in the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center last spring.

Claire Tuft (Assistant Director) is a senior majoring in Theatre and Drama and English. At IU she has appeared on the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center stage as Susie Monahan in Wit. She has also been seen as Martirio in House of Bernarda Alba, Sonya in Uncle Vanya, Juliet in Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet (independent student production). Claire was a recipient of the Rosemary M. Schwartzel award. She is from Denver, Colorado. 

I. Christopher Berg (Scenic Designer) joined the department in 1997. Prior to IU, he worked as Technical Director for the University of Houston, School of Theatre. While in Texas, he also served as the Technical Director for the Houston Shakespeare Festival. He worked for OmniGroup, an exhibit company based in Houston, as one of their junior designers. There he worked with clients ranging from Exxon Chemical, Baker Hughes, to Continental Airlines. Christopher also worked a season with the Alley Theatre as their draft person. Professionally, He has designed numerous productions for Brown County Playhouse as well as Stanton’s Garage and The Peer Panel here at IU, Bloomington. Christopher is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Local 618. When not in a theatre, he is on a pursuit to become the national champion sailing a NACRA F17, a solo beach catamaran where he is currently ranked tenth in the nation.

Seamus M. Bourne (Assistant Scenic Designer) is a first-year M.F.A. student in Scenic Design. He received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. He was the scenic designer of Jake’s Women and Dracula at Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts and Shadow of a Gunman and Boy’s Life at UNCW. We can look forward to Seamus’ work as scenic designer for Side Man later this season. Seamus is from Tenafly, New Jersey.

Katherine Garlick (Costume Designer) is a third-year M.F.A. student in Costume Design. The Crucible is Katherine’s M.F.A. thesis project. At IU, she has designed costumes for productions of A Chorus Line, Arcadia, and Happy Birthday, Wanda June.Other IU designs include The Credeaux Canvas, Privilege, and The Memory of Water (independent productions).   Last summer she designed costumes for the Brown County Playhouse production of The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged).  She received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she designed costumes for The Laramie Project and Zastrozzi: The Master of Discipline, which earned her the first runner-up slot for the 2004 National Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Barbizon Award for Excellence in Costume Design. Katherine is from Connellsville, Pennsylvania.

Jesse Portillo (Lighting Designer) is a third-year M.F.A. student in Lighting Design, who received his B.F.A. from the University of Utah. Previous lighting design credits at IU include Our Country’s Good, Wit, Bacchai, and assistant designer on The Cherry Orchard. Other design credits in Bloomington include Frozen and Uncle Vanya (independent student projects) and Bicentennial Babies (Bloomington Playwrights Project). Last summer he served as the master electrician for the Brown County Playhouse. Favorite lighting design credits elsewhere include Hamlet and Julius Caesar at Salt Lake Shakespeare, The Tempest and Execution of Justice at the University of Utah, The Bartered Bride at Lyric Opera Ensemble and Kate Clinton at the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Utah. Additionally he was Costume Designer for Cloud 9 at the University of Utah. Jesse is from Salt Lake City, Utah.

Andrew Hopson (Sound Designer) is an Assistant Professor of Sound Design in the Department of Theatre and Drama, appointed this year. He is also a professional sound designer and composer for stage, CD, and film. Andrew received his B.A. in history from Grinnell College, his M.M. in composition from Butler University and his Ph.D. in composition from the University of Minnesota.In theatre he has scored or designed shows at such theatres as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespearean Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, American Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, Cincinnati Playhouse, Victory Gardens, Harvard University and the Indiana Repertory Theatre, where he was resident sound designer for five years. In 2004 he had his New York debut with Trying, which was rated one of the best Off-Broadway shows of the year. As a musician, recording engineer, and producer, he has released over 30 CDs ranging from Baroque chamber works to books on tape. Recently, he composed music for the films Utah's Olympic Legacy, Hockey’s Greatest Era 1942-1967, and The Birth of Legends.

Emma Bausback (Stage Manager) is a junior majoring in Theatre and Drama and Contemporary Dance. Emma makes her Ruth N. Halls debut after working as Stage Manager for Goodnight Desdemona, Good Morning Juliet and SubUrbia , all independent student productions. She was also Assistant Stage Manager for Greater Tuna at the Brown County Playhouse, and she apprenticed Hooray for Bollywood and My Gypsy Soul with IRT’s Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre. Emma is from Greensburg, Indiana.

Brittany Irwin (Assistant Stage Manager) is a sophomore majoring in Theatre and Drama, working on The Crucible asher first production at IU. Brittany is from St. John, Indiana.

Tyler Hill (Assistant Stage Manager) is a senior majoring in Theatre and Drama who performed in last year’s production of She Stoops to Conquer as Aminidab and Bits in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre. Tyler also performed as William Kemp in A Cry of Players at the John Waldron Arts Center, and in Christmas Eve at the BPP as Ivan/Paunchy Patsuik. Tyler is from Bloomington, Indiana.

Nancy Lipschultz (Voice and Speech Coach) is an associate professor in voice and has worked as an actress in New York, California, regionally in Michigan, Texas and in her hometown of Chicago. She has also worked overseas in London and is a veteran of six Fringe festivals in Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition to appearing on stage she has worked on several feature films, in numerous industrial films, many commercials, as well as, on network Television. She is a member of Screen Actors Guild, Actors’ Equity Association and VASTA. Nancy holds an M.F.A. in Theatre from Wayne State University and has been a professor of Acting, Voice and Directing at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, Michigan State University, Ohio Wesleyan University and was most recently Head of Graduate and under graduate Voice for the Actor at Wayne State. Directing credits include: Evita, Much Ado About Nothing, Twilight Los Angeles, Fires in the Mirror and Jackie and the Beanstalk. She has been the vocal coach for many professional and university productions and recently coached the New York City Opera production of Dead Man Walking directed by Tony award winner Leonard Foglia.
