(a love story) by Kelly P. Lusk
Love. We’ve killed over it. We’ve fought wars over it. There are endless bookshelves in libraries all over the world that dissect and explore this subject. We’ve been told by The Beatles that it’s all we need. But what is it? (a love story) tells the story of three couples who are set out to answer this question. We’re told every day, in songs, movies and books, what it means to be in love, but it’s not until you are in the depths of it that you realize that maybe this isn’t what you wanted. And you want out. Or perhaps it is exactly what you wanted. And you want more. The interesting thing about love, though, is it takes two people. But what happens when you love that person more than they love you… or they love you more than you love them…
Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea by Nathan Alan Davis
Dontrell, whose dreams have never been more fantastic or more harrowing: Nightly, he sees a captive African—the spitting image of his own father—thrown overboard during the Middle Passage. As visions of this man’s last fateful hours continue, Dontrell makes a decision: He will dive into the ocean and retrieve the drowned captive from the deep. All he needs is a boat, swimming lessons and—most importantly—the faith of his family and loved ones as he pursues an impossible task. Determined to bring back a record of the voyage, he sets off with a hero’s bravery and a willing companion. But the ocean, like the tides of history, holds many mysteries that must remain untold; and the sea has its own laws concerning redemption and return.

For much of the twentieth century, plays and musicals would be written, cast, costumed, rehearsed, and then taken “on the road” for the production to be tried out before opening on Broadway. That model has gone away, in today’s theatre and our interconnected world, new methods have been developed to bring new plays to the stage. Playwrights Ken Weitzman, Nathan Alan Davis, and Kelly P. Lusk will discuss the various ways new works are created and produced in the twenty-first-century American theatre. They will also discuss two world premieres taking place at the IU Theatre, Nathan’s Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea and Kelly’s (a love story).
