Proposal/Grant Writing Tips

Specific Sources of Funding
Summer Instructional Development Fellowships
Sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. This grant supports efforts to improve teaching by encouraging new and/or improved approaches to instruction. Projects funded will include, but are not limited to: development of new, pace-setting courses; extensive innovation in the organization and style of existing courses; or development of new modes of instruction. Deadline: February 19, 2010.
Active Learning Grants
Sponsored by Campus Instructional Consulting and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. Active Learning Grants will be awarded to course development plans that encourage greater student engagement and offer the opportunity for transformative learning experiences. Examples of active learning methods include, but are not limited to, team based learning, collaborative learning, problem-based learning, case methods, course projects, and simulations. Deadline: February 19, 2010.
Teaching With Sakai Innovation Award
Sponsored by IBM, with additional support from rSmart and John Wiley and Sons. This award publicly honors successful pedagogical innovation and best practices in teaching and learning in a Sakai environment. Winners are awarded a trip to present at the annual Sakai conference and will receive their award during the conference. Deadline: March 15, 2010.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL)
Sponsored by SOTL and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. This grant focuses on current or ongoing studies into issues of teaching and learning as part of the SOTL program at IU. The amount awarded is $2,500; $2,000 is awarded upon receipt and $500 is awarded upon presentation at a campuswide SOTL forum. Deadline: TBA.
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Leadership Grant
Sponsored by SOTL and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. This grant will be awarded to a team proposing a SOTL research initiative that promises to have a sustained impact upon instructional development and education and that could serve as a model for others on campus. The amount awarded is $35,000. Deadline: TBA.
Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE)
Sponsored by the Office of Postsecondary Education, U.S. Department of Education. This grant focuses on innovative reform projects that hold promise as models for the resolution of important issues and problems in postsecondary education. The amount awarded varies. Deadline: varies.
Technology Pilot Project in International Studies Grants
Sponsored by IU's Center for the Study of Global Change. This grant seeks proposals which foster and utilize innovative technologies for academic and outreach and which incorporate interactive communications technologies (ICT), such as videoconferencing and other digital mediums, as the means to facilitate global conversations and collaborations for both students and faculty. The amount awarded normally does not exceed $4,000. Deadline: proposals accepted in summer prior to academic year of award.
