Eli's unwavering interest in music held prime significance as a creative expression throughout his life. He came from a singing family. Though his father was a Baptist minister at a time when music was not permitted in the Baptist church, there were other community occasions for sharing music. Before funeral homes existed, his parents used to sing at people's houses prior to burial ceremonies. Eli considered himself to be a "Pentecostal Quaker."
