The Garage pickers --
Saturday night dance and jam sessions at Nave's garage

The town of Fairmount, Indiana has been developing a tradition already past its tenth year, of getting together in a garage every Saturday evening, jamming and dancing together. John Nave hosts these Saturday evening jam sessions in his heated body shop garage. He and his wife Joann have been a part of these sessions since the first one more than 10 years ago, which started in a two-car garage.

Sometimes there would be as many as 18 guitarists playing together, and sometimes there would be only two. Usually it is the same crowd that comes out to listen every Saturday, but occasionally people just drop by. Sometimes people would bring an elaborate casserole to eat, and sometimes there'd be just cake and cookies.

It is a good place for the old folks to come where they can feel comfortable in getting up to dance, says John, or just sitting and listening. Young kids also come occasionally.

There are a few places in the area that have these weekly sessions and quite a few good musicians that make the weekly rounds.

John thinks that he’s the only one in that crowd that plays in his garage who can read music. Most of the guys just pick it up by ear.
