Benjamin Cash -- Wood carver
Grant County has many woodcarvers in its population, partly thanks to the very active Eastern Woodlands Carving Club in Converse, Indiana. Ben Cash carves Santa Clauses and golf balls. He learned to carve golf balls at the carving club from somebody "off the street." Later he won first prize in a contest for making Whoopie Goldberg in a golf ball.
Ben's primary kind of carving is making Old World Santas. He likes the character a lot and says that the Old World Santas are much more interesting than the conventional "Coca Cola" Santa.
Ben got interested in carving because he had done some woodworking with a band saw. He cut out a pair of horses and wanted to figure out how to make them look less flat. Now Ben makes Old World Santas professionaly and is very well-known throughout the carving world.
Ben and fellow carver Tom Brown introduced carving to the Scouts as a skill for which they could earn their merit badges. According to Tom, Ben "eats, sleeps, and breathes carving."
