Ukranian egg decorating (pysanky eggs)
Carol's parents are from the Ukraine. She learned to decorate eggs from her aunt and has passed it along to her daughters.
Carol prefers the old technique, which is called the open-flame method, in contrast to the electric method. Making the eggs is very time-consuming and takes anywhere from 2-3 hours to 18 hours for a goose egg.
Carol has been making eggs for 30 years. She also knows how to make Ukrainian Easter bread, but says that her daughter can do it much better.
Eggs are not only given at Easter, but also as gifts or Valentine's Day presents. Traditionally, the neatness of the decorated egg was an indication of one's housekeeping skills.
