Dr. Bomie Han -- Community Korean cultural leader

Dr. Bomie Han, a cultural leader in the Hamilton County Korean community, enjoys life in America, but says, “I will be always a Korean in my heart.” The cultural activities he shares with his church community help them reconnect with the traditions they or their ancestors grew up with.

“I’m not only helping myself, but also helping each individual person in the community," says Dr. Han.

"This cannot be done by making a personal effort on your own –- you have to go through some type of community. You can celebrate Korean New Year’s Day within your own family, but you lose all the meanings, all the flavors. You only have the skeleton, you don’t have any flesh.”

A teacher and principal of the Korean school associated with his Presbyterian church, Dr. Han has initiated several activities to celebrate and revitalize Korean culture within the community.

One of these is the Korean New Year, a celebration of ancestry in which deceased and living elders are honored with a feast. Church members extended this event to honor American veterans of the Korean War and to thank them for their service, a development which makes Dr. Han very happy.
