Hotel Scam

Hotel Scam - Travelers, please be advised that GE Corporate Card, IU's corporate credit card company, has issued a warning concerning a credit card scam. The scam targets travelers who may be tricked into giving credit card information over the phone.

Details

  • The perpetrator will call the front desk of the hotel asking for someone with a common last name, such as Johnson.
  • The front desk will put the perpetrator through to your room.
  • Claiming to be the concierge or someone with the hotel, they will inform you that there is a problem with your credit card and will ask you to verify your credit card number and billing address.
Note: This information can be enough for a scammer to make illegal transactions using your credit card.

Protect Yourself!

  • Never give out your credit card information over the phone. It is highly unlikely that the hotel would ever ask you to do this.
  • If you receive such a call, tell the caller you will verify the information in person at the front desk.
  • When you follow-up on the call, you will likely find out it was a scam.
Note: Always handle any hotel problems with your credit card at the front desk, in person.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please call Travel Management Services at (812) 855-2873.
