Ellefson Attends Mellon Orchestral Forum in Chicago

While a member of the Seattle Symphony, Peter Ellefson was on the steering committee for the Mellon Foundation's Symphony Orchestra Program. This is an important and innovative project to help symphony orchestras survive in an increasingly challenging and changing world. The meetings were near Chicago November 3-5, 2002. Ellefson to Present "Good Playing versus Good Playing"

Newly appointed Associate Professor Peter Ellefson will give his presentation of "Good Playing versus Good Playing" during the Monday night masterclasses, November 11 and 18. The premise of the presentation is that there are many ways to interpret music and even though the interpretations may sound vastly different they may still be very worthy, musically speaking. Prof. Ellefson has accumulated many rare recordings and broadcast tapes that he will share with attendees.

Peter Ellefson to Perform (again!)

Attempting to wear out his welcome as soon as possible, Peter Ellefson will perform Defaye's Deux Danses for the November 11, 2002 masterclass and a set of 5 Brahms songs for the November 18th, 2002 masterclass. Previous performances have included the September 9 Masterclass where he performed the "Variations in F-sharp minor" by Leon Stekke, the October 23rd Faculty Trombone Recital where he offered up Bryan Lynn's "Doolallynastics" for the audience's consideration.

Ellefson was a recent guest of the IU Trombone Choir, Carl Lenthe, Director, when he performed Tommy Pederson's Cogent Caprice. Ellefson believes it is very important to perform for the students saying, "Performing for the IU students is important for me. Now that I have left the Seattle Symphony, I have an opportunity to develop other aspects of my playing and musicianship. It also allows the students to hear another point of view, trombonistically speaking. I like sharing my product with the students---we are really in this all together."

Stewart in a Flurry of Recording Activity

Suggested by titles such as Pavarotti and Friends, Dee Stewart has launched a new recording venture last summer that makes use of his close connection with great musicians on the IU campus and beyond. The title of this project is D+ (or Dee Plus).

StudioLenthe in Recital - 11/14/02

All members of Mr. Lenthe's studio will perform a concerto selection with piano on Thursday 11/14/02 at 8:30pm in MA452. This recital serves as studio prelims for the concerto competition, with repertoire chosen from works for trombone and orchestra. Works from David, Rota, Grondahl, Creston, Guilmant, and others are planned. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!

Lenthe goes north

Now that the birds have gone south, Carl Lenthe will be going north from November 17th to 24th, 2002. The first step will carry him only as far as Bloomington North High School, where he will perform Arthur Pryor's "The Patriot" with the Indiana All-District band. From there, he flies to Minneapolis for a week with the Minnesota Orchestra, performing Prokofiev and Bernstein under Leonard Slatkin. During his stay there, he will also give a master class and recital at the University of Wisconsin (Eau Claire). A further performance of Pryor's "Patriot" with the Chaska (Minnesota) band is also planned.
