Faculty Recital
Carl Lenthe, Bass Trombone
Kimberly Carballo, Piano

January 19th, 2011 in Ford Hall

The program included works by Telemann, Wilder, Hidas and Lebedev as well as three traditional spirituals. It was Lenthe's first recital solely on the bass trombone, and was also the maiden appearance of the new B&S bass trombone, Model "Sarastro" - an instrument of Lenthe's design, the newest result of his collaboration with the B&S Company of Germany.

Carl notes, "I have always doubled and dabbled on the bass trombone, but started taking it more seriously in 2010 in order to take my playing of the instrument up a level, in anticipation of the "Sarastro" development with B&S.  This recital was my Christmas Break project.  I had the idea during exam week (Dec. 13-17).  Kim and I found a date that worked, and then -- I started practicing!.  The Telemann Fantasy, frankly, had a few too many blips, slips and wobbles, and would have been distracting here.  Everything else is as performed live.  I hope you enjoy the offering."

“Sonata (1969)”, by Alec Wilder (1907-1980)

“Three Spirituals”, Traiditonal

"Meditation" by Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007)

"Concerto No . 1" (in one movement) by Alexey Lebedev (1924-1993)
