IU Learning from Disaster Seminar Series: “The Tsunami of Giving: Humanitarian Aid in Asia.”
Date: March 7, 2005
Time: 7 – 9 p.m.
Venue: Georgian Room, IMU
Special Guest Speaker: Professor Leslie Lenkowsky, Public Affairs & Philanthropic Studies and School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University
Description: After the Boxing Day tsunami devastated Southeast and South Asia, Americans responded with enormous generosity, contributing over $750 million in less than a month (in addition to what the United States government provided). Why are we so ready to help others half the globe away? Are we as willing to help our own neighbors? And what impact will our gifts have in Southeast and South Asia, now and in the future? The tsunami was not only a great personal tragedy for those in its path, but also is a great challenge for humanitarian aid. How well is it doing? For more information, please contact Michelle Kemp at inpirg@indiana.edu or IU Asian Culture Center at acc@indiana.edu.
