2006 University Club Scholarships Awarded

The 2006 University Club Scholarships of $750 each were presented at the annual meeting on March 27 to Morgan White and Julie d’Argent.

Morgan has worked at the Cyber CafÈ, in the Main Library, for the last two semesters. According to her manager, Mark Elliot, “she has been a hard worker and provides excellent customer service. She is a team player and is always willing to help out when necessary. As a Kelley School of Business student, she also balances her work schedule with her school schedule very well. She never forgets that her primary reason for being here at Indiana University is to get an education.”

Morgan has a 3.1 grade point average and is an undergraduate student majoring in finance and accounting. She is a Hudson-Holland scholar, Kelley Emerging Leader, Kelley School of Business Direct Admit, member of the National Association of Black Accountants and Women in Business.

Much of Morgan’s tuition is paid by a partial scholarship and partial student loans. She and her parents pay the rest, which is sometimes a struggle because her parents have four other younger children to care for. Morgan says that receiving a University Club scholarship will really ease some of the family’s stress.

The second 2006 University Club Scholarship was presented to Julie d’Argent, who is a graduate student from Mauritius, an island off the east coast of Africa.

Julie has a 3.85 grade point average and is studying for a master’s in counseling and counselor education. She did her undergraduate work at Curtin University in Western Australia.

Julie’s letter of recommendation was written by John Dages, psychologist and associate director of the George Washington University Counseling Center. He says, “I helped supervise Julie’s research for her undergraduate thesis at Curtin University, and I was immediately impressed by her quick grasp of research methodology, her strong work ethic, sense of independence and autonomy in completing tasks, and her ability to function well as part of a team-based research project.”

At the IMU, Julie works at the front desk of the Back Alley, dealing with customers and ensuring that they have a good time either bowling or playing pool at the recreational center. Her supervisor is John Bower.

Julie is delighted to have found a job at the IMU. As an international student, she can work only on campus and the IMU is the perfect place. As an international student, her tuition costs are high and she works to help cover her other monthly expenses.

Julie intends to pursue a Ph.D. in counseling psychology after she finishes her master’s and then go back to help her native country after completion of her degree.

She also wants to thank the University Club for providing students who work at the IMU with such a scholarship as it means a lot to know that people out there care and are good enough to think of others.

Ruth Albright, scholarship chair, thanked all who have contributed to the scholarships over the past three years. It has been exciting to see the endowment grow and to be able to increase the two scholarships to $750 this year.

Ruth also thanked her committee: Ron Kovener, Lu Cregar, Dick Dever and Bill Kroll. She is stepping down as scholarship chair and is delighted to be leaving the job in the capable hands of Suzanne Phillips. Ruth looks forward to continuing to watch the endowment grow, thanks to University Club members.
