"Moving Technology from the Academic to the Business Setting"

Presenters: Dr. Linda Malkas, Dr. Rebecca Lyon and Claire Deselle.

The program will be a panel discussion with Dr. Malkas, Dr. Rebecca Lyon representing IURTC, IU's support of new businesses and specifically faculty start-ups and Claire Deselle, President and CEO of CS-Keys Inc.

Linda Malkas

About Dr.Linda Malkas: Vera Bradley Chair of Oncology

Dr. Malkas received an A.S. degree in Engineering, a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.M. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the City University of New York. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. She subsequently joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in 1990.

During Dr. Malkas' tenure at Maryland she was the first to isolate and characterize a fully functional multiprotein complex from human cells that supports DNA replication in vitro. Dr. Malkas then demonstrated that the DNA replication apparatus of human breast cancer cells mediates an error-prone (mutagenic) DNA synthetic process. She was also able to correlate acquisition of a mutagenic DNA replication mechanism in breast cancer with a modification of a specific protein in the DNA synthetic apparatus. Dr. Malkas is evaluating this protein as a potential biomarker for breast cancer and as a target for cancer therapy.

Dr. Malkas attained the rank of Full Professor at the University of Maryland in July 2001. In January 2002 Dr. Malkas joined the faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine as a Professor of Medicine, and was named the Vera Bradley Chair for Oncology. In March Dr. Malkas was named the co-leader of the Indiana University Cancer Center's Hormone and Reproductive Oncology Program. In 2006, she was given the additional title of Professor of Surgery.

Dr. Malkas has been invited to participate in a variety of National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Department of Defense (DOD) grant review study sections. These include: permanent membership on the NIH Experimental Therapies I (1994-1998) and the Cancer Molecular Pathobiology Study Sections (2003-2007), a variety of NIH Program Project Review Committees and special review panels, a number of DOD Breast Cancer Program grant review panels and chairing a DOD ovarian program project review panel (Sept. 2001).

About: Rebecca Lyon, Ph.D., Associate Director of Life Sciences

Her scientific background includes microbiology, cell biology and genetics.

Prior to IURTC, Rebecca worked at the Office of Technology Management at Washington University in St. Louis.

Rebecca is an Indiana native and a graduate of IU. She received her B.S. in Biology from IU Bloomington and her Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology and Pathogenesis from Washington University.

More About IURTC:The IU Research & Technology Corporation, which keeps track of university technology transfer and development activities, also received 216 invention disclosures, executed 70 licenses and options and helped form five new businesses in FY '07 (through its Emerging Technologies Center), also a record.

"This is an exciting trend," said IURTC President and CEO Mark Long. "There's really a lot of activity on the Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses and a greater interest among researchers in seeing their efforts developed into something beneficial."

A new company, called CS-Keys, Inc. (CS-Keys), is determined to help patients and slash breast cancer death rates with a new diagnostic tool that can help detect cancer in its earliest stages. CS-Keys’ technology was developed in the lab of Dr. Linda Malkas, Indiana University School of Medicine Professor of Medicine and Vera Bradley Chair for Oncology. This technology is expected to impact the way women with breast cancer are diagnosed and treated and potentially lead to more targeted therapeutics. It could also impact the quality of life for patients undergoing treatment.

About CS-Keys Inc: CS-Keys has identified a novel biomarker, an antibody, that has been shown to be highly effective in identifying malignant cells. “This new diagnostic utilizes current medical practices in use for detecting breast cancer,” said CS-Keys founder Linda Malkas, Ph.D. “Pathology labs do not have to invest in any additional equipment. They only need a minimal amount of training and a stain that we have developed for this purpose.”

CS-Keys will use a $285,000 Indiana Seed Fund investment to complete several key scientific and business milestones. These milestones include validation and clinical studies, hiring a full-time Chief Executive Officer and completing a market and product strategy study. The company will be located in Indianapolis, Ind.
