Friday evening - May 8

Meeting and sharing was the Friday Evening agenda! Club representatives met for an informal dinner. Clubs brought posters, photographs, power point slide shows and other materials to share their club projects, programs and challenges.

The after dinner program, "The Magic of Quilts" was presented by Annette Whims and Bea Hughes. Both are members of the MSU Faculty Folk Club. The Quilter's Interest Group makes museum quality baby quilts and gives them to the INTERNATIONAL AID INC. 17011 Hickory Street, Spring Lake (846-7490). This organization auctions the quilts to raise money to fund their aid projects. The presenters also spoke about antique quilts and explained how you can tell when a quilt was made by the materials used. They brought many beautiful old hand-quilted quilts to show. In addition to giving quilts to the International Aid Organization, they created a full sized display quilt which was raffled and the money raised went toward MSU Scholarships for returning students. Printed note cards with a photograph of the quilt that was raffled continues to raise money for the scholarships.
 
Saturday morning delegates met in the National Food Safety and Toxicology Center. Dr. Edward Mather spoke briefly about the important research that is conducted at this center. Then Dr. Mary Harvey led a workshop using "True Colors", a program that helps one understand the different leadership and personality styles of colleagues, friends and members. Following the "True Colors" Workshop club representatives were treated to a guided tour of the MSU Horticultural Demonstration Garden and the 4H Children's Garden. The Children's Garden is a creative venture to teach children about many different kinds of plants and plant environments. The tour guides were MSU Faculty Folk Club members, Judy Loescher and Maryanne Illman.

These hour-long sessions were followed by an opportunity to take a guided tour of Wharton Performing Arts Center. The tour guide and MSU Faculty Folk member was Debbie Gift, Wharton Center Education Director.

Each Big Ten Club brought a centerpiece which represented their club and its interest groups. Pictured is Pat Chase placing The Indiana University Women's Club's centerpiece on one of the tables. The evening's intellectually challenging and entertaining speaker was Dr. D. Gordon Rohman. The title of his presentation was: "Life--A Play on Words in Four Acts."

The conference ended Sunday morning after breakfast at the Kellogg Conference Center. The MSU Faculty Folk conducted a short business meeting and clubs received the materials each club prepared.

Wisconsin celebrates their 100th year anniversary.

The University League, Inc., University of Wisconsin's Norma Brooks reviewed the 100th anniversary events. One member wrote and published a book detailing their history which was presented to members and their guests at an elegant dinner which in addition to celebrating their long history also raised over $10,000 for their scholarship fund.
 
The University Circle, Northwestern University, closed the conference by presenting each club an African Violet plant in Northwestern purple. The presenters were Nancy Allred, Tamara Iverson-Foster, and Maria Poeppelmeir. Northwestern will host the Big Ten Women's Club conference on June 27, 28 and 29 in 2003.
