About Sandra Shapshay

Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Philosophy, Affiliate Faculty at the Indiana University Center for Bioethics in Indianapolis.

Interests: bioethics, biomedical ethics, aesthetics, cloning

Education:
* B.A. at University of Pennsylvania, 1991
* M.A. in Philosophy at Columbia University, 1994
* Ph.D. in Philosophy at Columbia University, 2001

Dr. Shapshay has been the recipient of a Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, Interdisciplinary Faculty Fellowship 2004-2005 and a DAAD year-long grant for study and research in Germany (1996-7). Her research focuses on two major areas: Biomedical ethics and the relationship between aesthetics and ethics, especially as it was theorized in late 18th and 19th century German philosophy in Kant and Schopenhauer. Her biomedical ethics research interests include the relationships between practical ethics and aesthetics, justice and access to health care, and children's rights with respect to reproductive technologies. Currently she is editing a collection of original essays entitled "Bioethics through Film" to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press and is working on a book provisionally entitled "Bioethics, Justice and the Child." Recent publications include the article "The Human Being in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction: An Argument Against Human Cloning" (in the Journal of Philosophical Research).
