HICKORY GHICKORY GROVE LOOP

Usually when we hike south of Lake Monroe, we pick a trail in the Deam Wilderness. But there are also great trails further south in the Hoosier National Forest. This 4.5-mile loop trail starts at Hickory Grove Church in northern Lawrence County and is mostly on ridge tops, except for one dip down to Hunter Creek Valley. An unusual aspect of the route is that it passes through parts of three counties - with great forest scenery all along the way

.

Leave Time: 8:00 a.m.Carpool from east side of Bloomingfoods/K-mart parking lot.
Distance: 4-4 miles
Estimated Hiking Time: 3 hour
Difficluty: Moderate

WINTER TOUCH THE EARTH

This 1.5-mile hike is in a Sycamore Land Trust preserve between Nashville and Columbus less than a mile south of highway 46. The trail passes through a variety of habitats including semi-open fields, scrub, and dense forest. Most is in reclaimed farmland. We may have a Sycamore Land Trust representative with us to describe the area and point out special features. The area has relatively little vertical relief, so the hike will be short and easy.)

Time:  Leave at 9:00 a.m. Carpool from east side of Bloomingfoods/K-mart parking lot.
Estimated Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
Estimated Hiking Time: 1 -2 hours Distance:  2 miles
Difficulty:  Easy

SPRING:

LOW GAP

In the 1991 edition of Nature Walks in Southern Indiana, Alan McPherson describes Low Gap Trail as a "rigorous day hike." When we did it in 2014 it was a workout. While much of the trail is on old roadbeds, expect to see spring wildflowers, particularly in the rock shelter area. They will distract from the ups and downs, and aching muscles. For those wanting to stretch themselves, while exploring the backcountry.

Leave Time:7:30 am Carpool from 1505 E. Richland Drive to Morgan Monroe State Forest.
Estimated Hiking Time: 5 1/2 - 6 1/2 hours
Distance: 2.5 miles
Strenuous

SUMMER:
Wednesday, July 15, 2015

McCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK

John McCormick built a cabin near the canyon in the 1820's. Several trails were built by the C. C. C. in the 1930's. This summer, we will visit some of the hills, forests, waterfalls and geology that brought the pioneering Virginian to Indiana. After a roughly two-mile walk, we'll cool off with drinks at the Canyon Inn.

Leave Time: 8:00 am, Carpool from March North, Kinser Pike, parking lot.
Estimated Hiking Time: 1 - 2 hours Distance: 2 miles
Easy to moderate

FEBRUARY HIKE

Winter 2014 - Waldrip House

A great time was had by all. Particularly due to Cathy Meyer's and Suzanne Roberts' historical and first person input. Nothing like having a family member put names to the faces in historical photos. "And, up in the second-floor window is where my mother sat!"

As we headed to warm ourselves with hot chocolate, on the right side of 446, Cathy Meyer spotted a red-shouldered hawk sitting on the ground. Did anyone in Bob's van see it? Impressive. A short hike filled with shared knowledge and warm experiences.
