Dr. M. Grace Calhoun
Associate Athletic Director for Academic and Student Development Services
Dr. M. Grace Calhoun is serving in her fifth year at Indiana as the Associate Athletics Director for Student Development). Her responsibilities include serving as a member of the senior staffs of the Director of Athletics and the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs; representing the institution in Big Ten and NCAA governance; directing the staff and operations of the Office of Student Development which coordinates academic services, student services, financial aid and admissions functions for the department; serving as sport administrator for the women's basketball program; providing general support for all other women's athletics programs and ensuring that women's issues are represented at appropriate levels; and serving as the liaison to the campus community.
Calhoun also currently serves as the chair of the NCAA's Awards, Benefits, Expenses and Financial Aid Cabinet, one of eight primary governance groups for Division I. As chair of this cabinet, Calhoun also serves on the Communications and Coordination Committee, the group charged with coordinating consideration of issues and legislative concepts between the various Division I governance bodies to ensure a cohesive approach to managing the Division I agenda. Calhoun has previously been active on other national and conference committees, including the NCAA Research Committee (chair 2006-08); NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee (vice chair 2002-06); NCAA Track and Field Committee; Big Ten Conference Administrators' Council ; and Big Ten Conference Academics and Eligibility Subcommittee to name a few.
Calhoun came to Indiana after serving as the Associate Director of Athletics for Administration and Compliance/Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics at Dartmouth College from 2002 to 2005. Calhoun's duties at Dartmouth included management and development of student-athlete support services, compliance, major project and outreach work, general administration for the department, and assessment work for the student affairs division. During this time, she also served as an NCAA Fellow, an NCAA-funded executive administrative development program for women and minorities aspiring to be athletics directors and conference commissioners.
From 1998 to 2002 Calhoun served as the Associate Executive Director of the Patriot League, the NCAA Division I conference comprised of Army, Navy, American, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh. In this position, Calhoun was responsible for managing 19 of the League's 22 sports, coordinating the conference's 20 championships, overseeing the League's NCAA and conference compliance and governance programs, and coordinating student services for the conference.
Prior to joining the Patriot League, Calhoun served as the Assistant Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator and later as the Acting Director of Athletics at Saint Francis University of Pennsylvania. Calhoun served as a sport administrator for 13 sports, developed the Red Flash's first student-athlete academic advising and counseling program, managed the NCAA and conference compliance programs, and had budget responsibilities. Calhoun began her career in athletics at the University of Florida where she served as a Graduate Assistant for the women's track and field program and as an Administrative/Student Services Assistant for the University's athletics association from January 1994 through January 1997. She provided academic and life-skills support to at-risk student-athletes and assisted the senior administrative team with compliance and event management among other duties.
Calhoun is a 1992 magna cum laude graduate of Brown University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. After spending one year as an engineering consultant with American Management Systems in Arlington, Va., Calhoun earned a master's degree in exercise and sport sciences from the University of Florida in 1994. Two years later, she earned her Ph.D in higher education administration with an emphasis in sports administration from Florida. An advocate for life-long learning, Calhoun returned to the classroom in the evenings and earned an MBA from Lehigh University in 2001 while working for the Patriot League.
Calhoun and her husband Jason, a PGA golf professional, have three daughters, Alexandra (7), Madeline (5), and Eleanor (1).
