Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Laws

The state’s liquor laws are too numerous to include here, but this is a brief overview of the statutes and penalties most relevant to students.

Offense Classification Imprisonment Fine
Possession and/or consumption by a minor Class C misdemeanor Up to 60 days Up to $500
Furnishing a false or altered identification Class C misdemeanor Up to 60 days Up to $500
A minor driving an automobile being used to transport alcohol Class C misdemeanor Up to 60 days Up to $500
Public intoxication Class B misdemeanor Up to 180 days Up to $1,000
Providing alcohol to a minor Class C misdemeanor Up to 60 days Up to $500
Encouraging or aiding a minor to unlawfully possess or use alcohol Class C infraction None Up to $500
Operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated Class A misdemeanor Up to 1 year Up to $5,000
Operating or riding in a vehicle with a container of alcohol that has been opened Violation of Bloomington city ordinance; state laws also apply None $50
