Noise Control

The city of Bloomington enacted several noise control regulations to protect the health and welfare of its citizenry. Everything from party sounds to amplified music falls under this noise control policy. Of particular focus is car stereo noise and subwoofer bass. A simple standard for whether noise is excessive is if it can be heard in the public right-of-way or in another resident’s home.

The city also instituted the Quiet Nights Program, which dedicates additional resources to the enforcement of the city’s noise regulations. This means that members of the Bloomington Police Department will be working overtime with exclusive focus on nighttime noise disturbances.

Penalties for violations of the city’s noise control ordinance vary from an official warning to a $50 fine to the charge of disorderly conduct (a class B misdemeanor arrest punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine).
