Minors and Second Majors that Expand Career Options with this Major

Minors in business, nutrition, psychology/counseling may not enhance employability but could give the certified athletic trainer valuable personal skills.

Career Options

Careers Specific to the Bachelor's Degree

With certification (and in some states, with licensure): Athletic trainer at a sports medicine clinic, high school (full time with a teaching certification), industrial athletic training facility, or with a professional sport organization (very difficult jobs to get).

Other Career Possibilities with a Bachelor's Degree

Athletic training with an additional teaching certification may open up some job possibilities.

Careers that Normally Require a Graduate Degree

Certified athletic trainer at a college or university; Ph.D. needed for program director of an accredited program.

Employment Opportunities

Job Outlook

The market is almost saturated, but major educational changes occurring over the next couple of years will begin to open up the market again. Flexibility with regard to job location will also enhance marketability.

Salary Information

Projected starting salaries will vary with degree and place of employment. Starting salaries range from $23,000-$30,000. Generally, certified athletic trainers with a bachelor's degree are paid less than those with a master's degree. Certified athletic trainers employed full time by a clinic/hospital and teacher/trainers with a master's degree were highest paid.

Potential Career Growth

Career growth can typically be accomplished by advancing from one setting to another (e.g., high school to college) or by promotion from an assistant athletic trainer level to the position of head athletic trainer.

Placement Statistics for IU Graduates with this Major

Placement is very high. Specific statistics are not available.

High School Preparation

Students considering a major in athletic training should take chemistry, physics, and four years of math, including calculus and probability/statistics. An advanced physical education course in anatomy/physiology, and/or experience as a student trainer, would be beneficial.

Special Opportunities

IU’s School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) is internationally recognized as a leader in human development, public health, nutrition, sport management, physical education teacher preparation, exercise science, athletic training, therapeutic recreation, and outdoor resource management. HPER’s three accredited departments all offer innovative and highly respected programs of study. Few institutions can compete with HPER’s educational, athletic, and professional service facilities. The Student Recreational Sports Center offers Olympic size swimming and diving pools, an elevated indoor jogging track, three multipurpose gyms, and racquetball and squash courts. The extensive strength and conditioning rooms are staffed with consultants who orientstudents to the equipment and provide fitness tips and guidance. Other facilities include research laboratories, a library, seminar rooms, gardens, outdoor centers, sports fields, an 18 hole golf course, a driving range, and tennis courts.
