THE UD ADVANTAGE

Welcome Letter
Our History
University Division Home

University Division (UD) is the first academic home for the vast majority of IUB freshmen. UD will provide you with a number of unique services. These services are tailored to meet your specific needs, whether or not you already have chosen your academic major.

For example, if you already have chosen your major:
  • Your UD advisor will give you expert, personalized advice about degree requirements, course selection, and course sequencing in that area.
  • Your UD advisor will help you connect with faculty, clubs, tutoring, internships, and other opportunities/services related to your intended major.
  • S/he also will be able to advise you about other areas to use for a minor or a certificate. Minors/certificates help to set you apart from other students in your major, making your academic program more distinctive. UD advisors have expert knowledge about all of IUB's academic programs, not just those offered by one particular school.
And if you're not sure about your intended major:
  • Because UD advisors have expert knowledge about all of IUB's academic programs (not just those offered by one particular school), your advisor can provide you with expert advice about any major.
  • Your UD advisor will guide you in identifying your interests and abilities, exploring majors related to them, and choosing your major.
  • Your UD advisor also will guide you in using materials from UD's award-winning Exploratory Student Resources (ESR) program, and you can attend workshops conducted by our ESR Coordinator as well.
In addition, whether you already have chosen your major or are undecided:
  • UD advisors are the campus specialists in working with freshman students and the freshman curriculum.
  • UD advisors have expert knowledge of the many other resources and services offered at IUB. Your advisor can refer you to the right place, no matter what your need.
  • UD offers its freshman advising right where you live; you'll be paired with a UD advisor whose office is in your residential neighborhood.
  • UD advising offers some evening walk-in hours each week as well.
  • UD also holds evening informational programs in the residence centers, bringing faculty from various disciplines out to talk with students.
  • Your UD advisor will send you emails to let you know about upcoming events such as these (and to warn you of important academic deadlines as well).
Bottom line, UD will provide you with the resources and services you need to succeed at IU Bloomington. We look forward to meeting you, and to welcoming you into the IUB community.
