Academic advising
is provided for all University Division students by
professional advisors who are located in strategically placed offices
across campus and by selected faculty members. These advisors provide
general support as you make the transition from high school to college
and prepare to enter a degree-granting school. They can assist you
with:
- Exploring academic interests and determining
an appropriate major
- Setting educational & personal goals
- Learning about degree requirements
- Discussing academic progress and finding
tutoring/other forms of support
- Selecting courses & preparing for
registration
- Understanding university policies and
procedures
- Finding activities to enhance your
undergraduate experience
IDENTIFYING AND
LOCATING
YOUR ADVISOR
Each University Division
student is assigned an
advisor, with whom s/he is encouraged to make appointments throughout
the year. Freshmen who live in residence halls are usually assigned to
advisors who maintain offices in residential neighborhood, or to a
faculty advisor. Students who live off campus, transfer students, and
all students beyond the freshman year are usually assigned to advisors
in the Division’s main office, currently located in Maxwell Hall.
As an incoming student
for fall you will be
mailed the name of your advisor during August, along with the date/time
of an initial advising meeting during Welcome Week. At this meeting,
you will learn your advisor’s office location, hours, the procedure for
making an appointment, and other information that will help you
successfully begin your first year as a college student. If you enter
IUB in January, you are assigned an advisor at the time of initial
registration.
If you do not
receive a letter from the UD during
August, you should inquire at the center desk of your assigned
residence hall or call the Advising
Office at
855-6768 after arriving
on campus to learn your advisor’s name and location of the advising
meeting during Welcome Week. During the year, you may call the UD
Advising Office at 855-6768 to learn advisor names/locations.
