Description of the Profession

Medical Imaging Technologists are radiographers who have completed additional education in advanced image production. They use interventional angiography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and/or ultrasonography as the image modality.

Skills and Characteristics Important to this Profession

Potential Medical Imaging Techs should exhibit social perceptiveness, learning strategies, critical thinking skills, instructional skills, active listening, active learning, reading comprehension, and written/oral expression.

Description of the Indiana University Medical Imaging Technology Program

Students are not admitted directly to the IU School of Medicine Medical Imaging Technology (MIT) program offered by the Radiologic Sciences department (Indianapolis). They must successfully complete the Associate of Science degree in Radiography before beginning the Bachelor of Science program in Medical Imaging Technology (see Radiography for more information). IU Bloomington students interested in MIT often take prerequisites for admission while preparing to apply for the Radiography Associate of Science degree. It normally takes two years to complete all admission requirements for both programs on the Bloomington campus.

Other Accredited Programs

For lists of accredited sonography and medical resonance imaging programs, see the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Additional Notes and Recommendations

Computer skills and an interest in life-long learning are also extremely important. Consider taking advanced computer skills courses (beyond what is required for admission) and fostering a sense of curiosity. IU Bloomington offers courses in informatics, critical thinking, ethics and logic .

HPPLC advisors strongly encourage you to take advantage of any such opportunities that arise during high school; or, if you are already in college, to arrange shadowing / observation as soon as possible. Refer to the PDF document below for further shadowing / observation information.
