Benefits Change Connection
Dependent Child Reaches Age 24
When a dependent child reaches age 24, he or she is no longer eligible for most IU-sponsored dependent benefits, regardless of student status. Since the university has an internal means of identifying this change, the university initiates the following actions without notice from the employee when a child becomes ineligible:
- The child's medical and dental coverage is discontinued
- COBRA is offered
- The child becomes ineligible for IU Tuition Benefit, life insurance, and Personal Accident Insurance.
To make changes to any of the plans listed immediately below, you will need to complete
the Change of Status form and
the subsequent personalized benefit enrollment form. Step-by-step instructions appear on the respective plan pages below. You must make the change within 30 days.
- Decrease coverage level.
Health Care:
- Decrease election if consistent with change.
Dependent Care:
- Decrease election if consistent with change.
(Consistency rule is satisfied if change corresponds with
change of status that affects either eligibility for coverage
under Plan or eligibility of expenses under applicable IRS
regulations.)
