Benefits Change Connection
Dependent Child Gets Married
Following the marriage of a dependent child, you will be able to—and in certain cases, you must—make changes to benefit plans outside of Open Enrollment. A married child is no longer eligible for certain benefit plans and you must notify the University of the marriage. The University intitiates the following actions:
- The child’s medical and dental coverage is discontinued
- COBRA is offered
- The child becomes ineligible for IU Tuition Benefit
Note regarding marriage of a dependent child:
A dependent ceases to be a covered dependent on the date of marriage,
regardless of when you turn in the change of status form. Therefore,
medical/dental claims past the date of the marriage are not covered.
To make changes to any of the plans listed immediately below, you will need to complete
the Change of Status form and
the personalized benefit enrollment form. Step-by-step instructions appear on the respective plan pages below. You must make the change within 30 days of the dependent child's
marriage.
A copy of the marriage certificate will be required.
Health Care:
- Decrease election if consistent with change.
- Decrease coverage level.
(Consistency rule is satisfied if change corresponds with change of status that affects either eligibility for coverage under Plan or eligibility of expenses under applicable IRS regulations.)
