Leadership Development at Indiana University

ELI (Executive Leadership Institute) and MTS (Management Training Series)

Indiana University provides unique leadership development opportunities for University leaders to further enhance their skills and toolkit. The series below are sponsored and facilitated by University Human Resources.

Executive Leadership Institute

Great leaders create an environment where people want to stay and contribute their best effort, time and time again, to help the organization achieve its mission and critical priorities.

The ELI series focuses on critical competencies for global leadership—competencies based on research and work from acclaimed leadership development experts in today’s field. In its second year, ELI participants represent 25 administrative leaders within the University.

The series is comprised of monthly (October – March) day-long sessions, with topics that include Trust: The Thing That Changes Everything, Influence: The Power to Change Anything, and Organizational Culture and Accountability.

The target audiences for ELI are associate and assistant vice presidents, vice chancellors, vice provosts, and associate and assistant vice chancellors.

Management Training Series

MTS is a leadership development series for managers at or above the director level. The series emphasizes how to enhance the ability of mid-level leaders to master organizational and leadership challenges. The series, which began in 1991, is currently in its 23rd year and continues to involve participants from every University campus. To date, over 500 MTS participants have completed the program.

The series is comprised of monthly (October – April) day-long sessions focusing on leadership development, organizational effectiveness, and high-performance teams. Participants, divided into teams, apply these strategies to real-life situations and present their results during the final session in April.

GIS Replaces HireRight System

Indiana University has contracted with General Information Services Inc. (GIS) for a web-based system to process Form I-9s, E-Verify checks, and criminal background checks. GIS replaces the HireRight system. GIS services include the electronic retention of associated records, management reports, and customer support.

The switch to GIS provides these benefits:

Enhanced Eldercare Referral Benefit to Include Childcare Resources

Understanding that caregiving and work demands are increasingly stressful and difficult to balance, Indiana University is finalizing arrangements for an enhanced replacement for the Eldercare Plan that was discontinued when My Healthcare Manager ceased business in 2012. The new plan will be available soon for all full-time Academic and Staff employees, Graduate Appointees, and Retirees.

In addition to eldercare support services, the plan will include access to an online resource for finding screened care options for babysitters, special-needs caregivers, nannies, household services, tutors, and more. Caregiver profiles will be available including background checks, client reviews, references, photos and other valuable information to aid in decision making.

Employees will be able to search for caregivers and also connect with Senior Care Advisors who can provide personalized guidance in navigating the complexities of senior care.

These services will be available nationally, so for those out of state the resources and referrals will be location specific.

Employees will access both child and elder care by creating an online account through a web site. Watch for an email announcement in the near future.

Employee Services in IU Mobile App

The Employee Services section of the IU Mobile app allows employees to view benefit, payroll, tax, total compensation, and demographic information from their mobile device. Employees are encouraged to use this service to manage many of their employment-related activities.

It is particularly important for employees to use the Employee Center (either through OneStart or through the IU Mobile app) to verify the accuracy of benefit elections, dependents, and beneficiaries.

Accessible anytime, anywhere, IU Mobile delivers information and services such as the Knowledge Base and Ask IU for all Indiana University employees. IU Mobile is available at no charge to employees. iPhone and iPad users can download the app through iTunes at itunes.apple.com/us/app/iu-mobile/id383456985; Android users can download the app from AppBrain at www.appbrain.com.
