Clinical Postdoctoral Fellows

On this page: Eligibility | Medical | Enrollment | Dental | Vision | Questions

Eligibility

Medical and Dental coverage is available to Clinical Postdoctoral Fellows through Aetna. The medical plan premiums are provided by the department in which each Fellow is employed.  Fellows can enroll in the dental plan on a voluntary basis.

Enrollment

Newly appointed Fellows are automatically enrolled in the medical plan. Returning Fellows are automatically re-enrolled in the plan each June for a July 1st effective date.

Eligible Fellows may also insure their dependents. Eligible dependents are the spouse/same-sex domestic partner (residing with the Insured Fellow) and unmarried children under the age or 26. Dependent eligibility is effective and expires concurrently with that of the Fellow, and can be done online or via paper. If the deadline has passed, your dependents may not enroll for coverage until the next coverage period, unless there has been a significant life change (i.e., marriage, birth, loss of prior coverage). For assistance with enrollment for dependents please contact University Human Resources.

Changes to health coverage must be made during designated enrollment periods or within 30 days of an IRS qualified change in status, such as a marriage or birth of a child. Human Resources must be notified within 30 days of such an event in order to change benefit elections.

Medical Plan

The plan uses Aetna’s Preferred Provider Organization, or PPO, network.  This plan lets members visit any doctor or hospital in Aetna’s preferred network without naming a primary care doctor. The Aetna network is a nationwide network and includes international coverage.  The plan year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30 each year.  Coverage for Fellows starting mid-year begins on the Fellow’s appointment date.  Coverage ends on the Fellow’s appointment termination date if prior to June 30.

Dental

Dental insurance is voluntary and can be elected. Dependents can also be enrolled on this plan. Enrollment can be done online or via paper form.

Vision

There is no vision plan. However, Aetna does provide coverage for a preventive eye exam. There is a Vision Wear Discount Program that comes with enrollment in the Medical plan.
