Health Care

Unless otherwise noted, enrollment in these plans is initiated by the employee. For all plans: If an employee is placed on leave at the time of initial employment, the employee's coverage becomes effective on the first day of active employment.

Medical Coverage   web page

  • Coverage starts on date of hire if enrollment occurs within 30 days of hire. IU contributes a significant amount to the employee's premium. The amount remaining is made by employee contributions on a pre-tax basis.
  • Coverage is available at four levels: employee, employee with child(ren), employee with spouse/domestic partner, and family.
  • Each plan offers comprehensive treatments, primary and specialist care, prescription drugs, mental health, wellness, and vision care.
  • One of the plans includes a Health Savings Account (HSA) into which contributions are made tax free.

Tobacco Cessation and Weight Loss Programs   web page

  • These are available for use on the start date of IU-sponsored medical coverage and paid for by IU.
  • Employees and their covered spouses/domestic partners can participate in these programs after enrolling in IU-sponsored medical coverage.

24-Hour Nurse Line   web page

  • After enrolling in IU-sponsored medical coverage, employees can access this line for non-emergency health questions and concerns. This service is paid for by IU.

Dental Coverage  web page

  • Coverage starts on date of hire if enrollment occurs within 30 days of hire. IU contributes a significant amount to the employee's premium. The amount remaining is made by employee contributions on a pre-tax basis.
  • Care may be received from any licensed dentist, however, a higher level of benefit is paid when a network dentist is used. This plan has annual maximum benefits for each enrolled member and for child orthodontia.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) web page

  • This service is confidential, paid by IU, and available to all full-time employees and their household members whether or not enrolled in a medical plan. Enrollment is not necessary.
  • Trained professionals are available 365 days a year when day-to-day activities are interrupted by stress. Assistance is provided in areas ranging from workplace conflict and depression to relationship problems, alcohol or drug concerns, and loss of a loved one.
  • An 800-number telephone help line is available for discussing problems and services and scheduling an appointment.
  • Participants are eligible for a maximum of six, face-to-face visits per year.

Resources The University offers these at no cost to the employee.

  • The Healthcare Transparency Tool helps employees find in-network medical services based on price and quality of care. It also tracks spending so members know how much they paid and why.
  • The Personal Health Record is an online, portable tool that allows employees to create an account to compile, manage, and share personal health information with physicians, providers, and family members in a secure, protected location.
  • The Health Savings Account provides tax-free savings and earnings that can be used immediately, in the future, and even into retirement. Applies to IU HDHP PPO & Health Savings Account participants only; requires a minimum monthly contribution.
  • The Tax Saver Benefit Plan consists of two reimbursement accounts: healthcare and a dependent care. Participants set aside salary contributions into one or both accounts. Contributions are not subject to federal, state, local or FICA taxes.
