Trustee Resolution

September 14, 2001 - Regarding the Provision of Domestic-Partner Benefits

WHEREAS, Indiana University has a continuing responsibility to provide a comprehensive benefits program for its employees;

AND WHEREAS, Indiana University is committed to equal opportunity for all persons, and provides its services without regard to gender, age, race, religion, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability;

AND WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees believes that fairness is one of the core values of the institution, and is crucial to its standing among its peers;

AND WHEREAS, the Bloomington Faculty Council and the IUPUI Faculty Council have unanimously endorsed the provision of benefits to domestic partners of Indiana University employees and students;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Trustees approves the provision of benefits to same-sex domestic partners of Indiana University employees and students who demonstrate that they are in a verifiably committed relationship.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Trustees directs the President of the University to develop and report to the Trustees' University Policies Committee terms and provisions related to the implementation of employee benefit programs, and authorizes the President of the University to examine the impact of any further expansion of university benefits.
