Job Purpose

Performs the grounds maintenance necessary for the use of collegiate athletic fields on the IU campus.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Mows and trims grass and turf areas using riding mower, push mower, and weed whip.

Prunes plants, trees, shrubs, vines, and hedges.

Applies seed, fertilizer, and chemicals for control of pest and disease.

Operates Tennant sweeper to clean stadium concourses, ramps, and playing fields.

Operates tractors with various implements for turf preparation, renovation, fertilizing, and care.

Operates weed whips, push mowers, hedge trimmers, and other power and hand tools to maintain the athletic grounds.

Operates dry line gun and paint sprayer to mark athletic practice fields and track events.

Operates roller, tractor with broom and/or box to maintain Little 500 track.

Operates skid steer loaders for snow removal; to grade areas; loads and unloads trucks; haul dumpsters, bleachers, and various athletic equipment.

Rakes leaves.

Shovels snow.

Uses dump truck, flat bed or pickup truck to haul materials or tow implements for campus maintenance and athletic events.

Works with various coaches to set up for athletic events, lays out and marks fields, moves, stores, and repairs athletic equipment and cleans up after athletic events.

Operates large or small tractors as needed during mowing season or for snow removal.

Works from prints to lay out fields.

Performs other related tasks as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to operate a truck safely and skillfully.

Knowledge of tools, equipment, techniques, skills, materials, and methods of landscaping and maintenance of lawns and formal plantings.

Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

Ability to prepare accurate field records, accounting for time and materials used in connection with projects assigned.

Working knowledge of the parameters and dimensions of all collegiate athletic events including: playing fields, courts, track events, and related equipment.

Ability to operate riding and push mower, power tiller, power edger, weed whip, blower, sprayer, tractor, skid steer loader, dump-bed truck, and basic hand tools.

Minimum Requirements

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: One-year landscape or grounds related work. One-year experience in operation of trucks with a dump bed.

Required Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, walking, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Spends most time outdoors, frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
