JOB TITLE AND GRADE: Carpet Installer / SMST

JOB PURPOSE

Lays and installs carpet on floors. Installs padding and trims flooring materials. Installs floor tile, removes glue, and repairs flooring.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Measures and cuts carpeting to size using carpet knife.

Cuts carpet padding to size and installs padding, following prescribed method.

Nails tack strips around area to be carpeted or uses old strips to attach edges of new carpet.

Stretches carpet to ensure smooth surface and presses carpet in place over tack strips.

Installs carpet on floors using adhesive, following prescribed method.

Cuts and trims carpet to fit along wall edges, openings, and projections.

Joins edges of carpet that meet at openings using tape with glue and heated carpet iron.

Fastens metal treads across door openings or where carpet meets flooring to hold carpet in place.

Cuts baseboard materials to specified measurements using hand tools, machines, or power tools. Nails baseboard to wall using carpenter’s hand and power tools.

Lays out, positions, and applies tile floors. Cuts pattern around floor obstructions. Rolls and presses floor covering into cement base to smooth and finish surface using hand roller. Fills cracks with plaster, putty, or grout to seal pores and form smooth foundation.

Performs other general building maintenance as assigned

Drives vehicle as needed

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Ability to operate electric hand tools (saws, drills, heating irons, staple guns), use hand tools (carpet knife, stretchers), and drive forklift truck.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Two years experience as a Carpet Layer

Required Certification/Licenses: Valid driver’s license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sitting, standing, walking, driving, squatting/kneeling, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possibility of exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that affect respiration and skin.
