JOB PURPOSE:
Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical equipment, controls, lighting and circuits. Ensures work is in accordance with relevant codes.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Installs, tests, maintains, and repairs electrical or electronic wiring, motors, light fixtures, electric panels and controls, wall clocks, compressors, and thermostats using hand tools and power tools.
Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components, including installing computer cabling.
Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
Installs ground leads and connects power cables to equipment, such as motors.
Bends conduit using electric or mechanical bender and places conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pulls insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.
Drives vehicle if needed.
Elevator Mechanic
Maintains and repairs elevators, escalators, and similar equipment.
Troubleshoots and locates malfunction in brakes, motors, switches, and signal and control systems using test equipment. Reads schematics.
Disassembles defective unit and cleans, repairs or replaces controller parts, generators, and brushes.
Inspects wiring connections, control panel hookups, door installation, and alignment and clearance of car hoistway.
Lubricates bearings and other parts to minimize friction.
Operates elevator to determine power demand and tests power consumption to detect overload factors.
Estimates and orders replacement parts with the assistance of the foreman.
Removes passengers from stuck elevators.
Cleans machine room and elevator pits.
Fire Alarm Technician
Inspects, tests, maintains, and repairs fire alarm wiring and equipment. Ensures that work is in accordance with relevant codes.
Inspects fire alarm systems using appropriate diagnostic programs and equipment.
Maintains, tests, and repairs fire alarm systems per established procedures.
Assists in diagnosing, testing, and repairing fire sprinkler systems.
Fire/Safety Maintenance Worker
Maintains, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs fire alarm, sprinkler, and security systems.
Tests fire protection and/or fire detection systems to verify that such systems are in proper working order in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
Troubleshoots and repairs fire protection and/or fire detection systems.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.
Ability to operate drills, conduit benders, drill presses, cable pullers, meters (volt, OHM, AMP, Meg), hand tools, hand drills, lathes, and hoisting equipment.
Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
Ability to operate computer. Experience with Koorsen diagnostic program.
Ability to perform truetest smoke detector sensitivity procedure.
Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Two years experience as an Electrician
Required Certifications/Licenses: Completion of DOL certified apprenticeship; completion of IU sponsored one-year multi-craft training program; valid driver’s license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Most time spent indoors but possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus when working outdoors. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels, and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
