JOB PURPOSE:
Shapes, finishes, and refinishes damaged, worn, or used furniture or new high-grade furniture to specified color or finish.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Disassembles item, masks areas adjacent to those being refinished, and removes accessories, using hand tools, to prepare for finishing.
Removes old finish and damaged or deteriorated parts, using hand tools, abrasives, or solvents.
Fills cracks, blemishes, or depressions and repairs broken parts, using plastic or wood putty, glue, nails, or screws.
Treats warped or stained surfaces to restore original contour and color.
Smoothes and shapes surfaces with sandpaper, pumice stone, steel wool, or chisel.
Washes or bleaches surface to return to natural color or prepare for application of finish.
Brushes, sprays, or hand rubs finishing ingredients onto and into grain of wood.
Finishes surfaces of new furniture pieces to replicate antiques by distressing surfaces with abrasives before staining.
Examines furniture to determine extent of damage or deterioration and determines method of repair or restoration.
Selects appropriate finishing ingredients, such as paint, stain, lacquer, shellac, or varnish, for wood surface.
Paints and cleans interior and exterior surfaces and hangs vinyl, if needed.
Drives vehicles including pickup truck, gator, or bucket truck as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to operate sandblaster, water blaster, spray equipment (airless and conventional) bucket truck, and fork lift.
Ability to use furniture refinishing tools, painting hand tools, and ladders.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Two years experience refinishing furniture
Required Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Equal most time indoors. Possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus if working outdoors. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
