JOB PURPOSE:

Perform basic and advanced grounds maintenance including pruning, seeding, fertilizing, diagnosis of pests and diseases, and chemical application.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains campus grounds and landscaped areas by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls.

Performs preliminary diagnosis of pests and diseases.

Mixes and sprays or spreads fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.

Mows and edges lawns using power mowers, edgers, and weed whips.

Prepares planting beds with hand and power tools. Integrates soil amendments.

Plants seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, and shrubs. Applies mulch for protection using gardening tools.

Attaches wires from planted trees to support stakes.

Prunes and shapes trees and shrubs.

Decorates gardens with stones and plants.

Follows planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and foliage. Drives truck to transport plants and landscaping materials/tools.

Hauls or spreads topsoil and spread straw over seeded soil to hold soil in place.

Gathers and removes litter. Rakes leaves and shovel snow.

Helps with the set up for campus functions.

Maintains irrigation systems including winterizing the systems and starting them up in spring.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of tools, equipment, techniques, skills, materials, and methods of landscaping and maintenance of lawns and formal plantings.

Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.

Ability to operate riding and push mower, power tiller, power edger, weed whip, blower, sprayer, tractor, skid steer loader, dump-bed truck, and basic hand tools.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Three years landscape or grounds related work.

Required Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, walking, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Spends most time outdoors, frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
