JOB PURPOSE:

Maintain and repair grounds related power equipment.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Diagnoses, tests, adjusts, and repairs small engines and mechanical systems of lawn mowers, tillers, sod cutters, blowers, compressors, chain saws, and other grounds related equipment.

Repairs or replaces defective parts such as water pumps, fuel pumps, steering components, hydraulic systems, brakes, exhuast systems, carburetors, thermostats, gears, solenoids, pistons, valves, and crankshafts.

Adjusts points, valves, carburetors, distributors, and spark plug gaps using feeler gauges.

Grinds, reams, rebores, and retaps parts to obtain specified clearances using grinders, lathes, taps, reamers, boring machines, and micrometer.

Installs batteries and tires. Performs grinding and sharpening of blades.

Performs preventative maintenance: change oil and filters, grease and lubricate moving parts.

Maintains inventory of parts and prepares purchase requisitions.

Maintains records of repairs and preventative maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of engine repair and maintenance.

Knowledge of mechanical systems of grounds related equipment.

Ability to use and operate lathe, grinder, drill press, impact tools, tire changer, compressor, hoist, welder, and hand tools ordinarily used by an engine mechanic.

Ability to read and understand equipment specifications and schematics.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Five years mechanical work on lawn and garden equipment

Required Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver’s license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, walking, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, sifting /carrying up to 25 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Spends most time indoors. Possible exposure to distraction/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
