JOB TITLE AND GRADE: Mail Clerk II / SMOJ

JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, performs duties in connection with the collection, sorting, and delivering of campus U.S. Mail for University departments usually located within one or two buildings.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepares incoming and outgoing mail for distribution.

Time stamps, opens, reads, sorts, and routes incoming mail.

Keeps necessary records and completed forms.

Answers questions about U.S. Mail regulations.

Takes postage meter heads to Post Office to be reset and occasionally picks up orders from Post Office.

Affixes postage to packages or letter by hand, or stamps with postage meter, and dispatches mail.

Wraps packages or bundles by hand or using tying machine.

Weighs packages or letters, computes charges, and accepts payment, using weight scale and rate chart.

Inspects wrapping, address, and appearance of outgoing package or letter for conformance to standards, and accuracy.

Releases packages or letters to customer upon presentation of written notice or other identification.

Performs campus-wide metering responsibilities for Campus Mail Room.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Knowledge of the location of University offices in primary work location, and knowledge of other offices to enable forwarding of mail.

Ability to perform tasks requiring medium-heavy physical effort.

Some knowledge of applicable Federal postal regulations.

Ability to perform basic computer and database operations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Previous experience with Campus Mail Services

Required Certifications/Licenses:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Spends most time indoors, possible exposure to extreme hot or cold for one hour plus. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc.
