JOB TITLE AND GRADE: Refrigeration Mechanic / SMST

JOB PURPOSE:

Installs, maintains, and repairs refrigeration equipment and central air systems.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Troubleshoots window air conditioners and chillers.

Installs, repairs, or replaces chillers, central air systems, window air conditioners, and small refrigeration equipment. Adjusts or replaces worn or defective mechanisms and parts and reassembles repaired systems.

Adjusts valves according to specifications and charges system with proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into the system.

Brazes or solders parts to repair defective joints and leaks.

Cuts, bends, threads, and connects pipe to functional components and water, power, or refrigeration system.

Dismantles malfunctioning systems and test components, using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.

Drills holes and installs mounting brackets and hangers into floor and walls of building.

Fabricates and assembles structural and functional components of refrigeration system, using hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment.

Installs expansion and control valves, using acetylene torches and wrenches.

Installs wiring to connect components to an electric power source.

Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.

Drives vehicle as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to operate electronic leak detection equipment, recovery machine, and vacuum pump.

Ability to use meters, capacitor analyzer, vacuum gauge, sawsall, Hilti drill, acetylene torch set, refrigeration gauges, and basic hand tools.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or GED

Experience: Two years experience as a Refrigeration Mechanic

Required Certifications/Licenses: Completion of DOL certified apprenticeship; completion of internal departmental cross-training; valid driver’s license

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Spends time both indoors and outdoors with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
