JOB PURPOSE:
Fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs sheet metal components. Work may involve any of the following: setting up and operating fabricating machines to cut, bend, and straighten sheet metal; shaping metal over anvils, blocks, or forms using hammer operating soldering and welding equipment to join sheet metal parts inspecting, assembling, and smoothing seams and joints of burred surfaces.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drills and punches holes in metal, for screws, bolts, and rivets.
Fastens seams and joints together with welds, bolts, cement, rivets, solder, caulks, metal drive clips, and bonds in order to assemble components into products or to repair sheet metal items.
Finishes parts, using hacksaws, and hand, rotary, or squaring shears.
Inspects individual parts, assemblies, and installations for conformance to specifications and building codes, using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers.
Selects gauges and types of sheet metal or non-metallic material, according to product specifications.
Shapes metal material over anvils, blocks, or other forms, using hand tools.
Trims, files, grinds, deburres, buffs, and smoothes surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts, using hand tools and portable power tools.
Performs other general building maintenance as assigned.
Drives vehicle as necessary.
Sheet Metal Mechanic
Installs door hinges, panic bars, thresholds, motorized projector screens and mounts, and toilet partitions.
Maintains kitchen equipment, roof gutters, and overhead doors.
Performs duct work and roofing work.
Duct Worker
Installs assemblies, including heating and air conditioning ducts and air handlers.
Installs air handlers and test and balance air flow.
Repairs and cleans air handlers as needed.
Welder
Installs metal components.
Welds metal repairs on mobile or stationary equipment.
Repairs air handler coils.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Ability to operate and use brake machine, power shears, roll machine, stationary power equipment, such as saws and drills, hand brake, welding equipment, hand tools, and air balancing equipment.
Ability to read blueprints.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED
Experience: Two years experience as a Sheet Metal Mechanic
Required Certifications/Licenses: Completion of DOL certified sheet metal apprenticeship; valid driver’s license
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying 25+ lbs multiple times per shift, fingering, talking, hearing, and seeing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Equal amounts of time may be spent indoors and outdoors with possible exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels, and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, etc. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, etc. that may affect respiration and skin.
