Appeals for Support and Service Staff Positions
Incumbents or supervisors may appeal a classification decision by submitting the Classification Appeal form to University Human Resource Services (UHRS). UHRS must receive the form within thirty days of the date the department was notified of the decision.
The Appeal Committee will consider the appeal at its next regularly scheduled meeting and will make a recommendation to UHRS.
Appeal results are final, and further review of the position will not occur within twelve months of the appeal decision unless there have been substantial changes in the purpose of the position and the nature of the work.
Classification decisions are not subject to the grievance procedure.
Definitions:
- Position - A set of duties performed by a single employee. The duties are specific to that particular position.
- Job - A broad category of work that may encompass a number of positions. Each Support Staff job has a set of specifications. Support Staff positions are classified to a particular job based on those specifications.
- Job specifications - A brief summary of the types of duties that would be expected to be performed in Support Staff positions classified to a particular job. The duties of a specific position may include job-related tasks other than those listed in the specifications. In addition, the position may not include some of the duties listed in the specifications.
The basis for classification of Support Staff positions is comparison to the Support Staff Job Specifications; for Service Maintenance positions see the Service Maintenance Job Specifications.
The Appeal Committee does not consider the following types of requests:
- Reclassification of a position from one functional group to another, i.e. Support Staff (SS) to PA, SM to SS, PA to SS, etc. University Human Resource Services reviews appeals to change functional groups.
- Change in job specifications
- Change in rank of a job
- Creation of a new job
The Appeal Committee has access to the Classification Appeal form submitted by the department, the current and previous Position Analysis Questionnaires, relevant Support Staff job specifications, and information provided or cited as part of the original review.
After considering all relevant information, the Appeal Committee will make its recommendation to UHRS. When the review of the appeal is complete, UHRS will notify the department of the final decision.
