Professional/Administrative Pay Guidelines
These Pay Guidelines summarize the compensation philosophies at IU-Bloomington.
- Only minimum rates are published. These rates are not intended to be starting rates; rather, they are salary "floors" below which employees should not be paid. No employee should be paid at a rate lower than the minimum of their classification level unless the position is a student internship, room and board is provided, or the exception is approved at the Vice President/Chancellor level in advance of the action.
- Employees in positions assigned to these classification levels will have their salaries reviewed annually, normally at the time of budget preparation.
- Employees promoted or reclassified to a position with a higher salary grade typically receive a salary adjustment. However, a salary adjustment is not required if the department deems that circumstances do not warrant an increase.
- Employees transferred to a position with the same salary grade typically will not receive a salary adjustment.
- Employees who accept a position with a lower salary grade or who are demoted due to a lack of performance or lack of qualifications typically will receive a decrease in salary. Employees whose positions are reclassified to a lower classification level may not receive a reduction in pay. However, a reduction in salary may occur if the department deems that circumstances warrant a decrease.
- Temporary salary adjustments may be made when an employee assumes the duties of a position in a higher grade level for at least two weeks and for reasons other than vacation. An employee may retain some significant elements of their regular position. The maximum adjustment typically is the greater of the minimum rate of the higher grade or 10%.
