Supervisory Tips for a Safe and Healthful Workplace

Know and comply with all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards that apply to your workplace.

Contact EHS at 855-6311 for more information. Check the EHS Website at www.EHS.indiana.edu. Check the OSHA Website at www.OSHA.gov. Contact Indiana OSHA at 317-232-2688.

Ensure that an OSHA poster is present for all employees to see and read.

Inform all new employees on all safety and health hazards before they begin work. Inform all employees of any changes of safety and health hazards in the work area. Provide safety training to allow workers to work in the presence of known hazards in a safe and healthful manner. Contact EHS for further information.

Identify all hazardous or potentially hazardous work conditions, correcting wherever possible, and implementing safe work places where the hazard cannot be removed.

Know what to do if an employee is involved in an accident or exposed to hazardous materials. Ensure that injury or illness reports are completed for every injury/illness regardless of severity. Provide complete information and do so in a timely manner.

Follow IU's Safety and Health programs that apply to your area, such as:

- Hazard Communications
- Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan
- Emergency Fire and Safety Plans
- Personal Protective Equipment
- Confined Space Entry
- Laboratory Safety / Chemical Hygene

Enforce proper use of prescribed protective equipment.

If OSHA Inspectors arrive, contact EHS at 855-6311, and a representative from EHS will accompany the inspectors.
