IU SBC Fellows Program Issues Fifth Request For Proposals

Program to support innovation in teaching and learning with IT enters fifth year at IU

BLOOMINGTON, and INDIANAPOLIS, IN — The SBC Fellows Program (formerly Ameritech Fellows) continues into its fifth year by issuing its latest request for proposals (RFP) today. Faculty on all campuses are invited to submit proposals for projects that advance innovation in the application of information technology (IT) to teaching and learning. Proposals must be received by September 12, 2003, to be considered for the fifth round of funding. Proposal submission guidelines can be found on the program's Web site at sbcf.iu.edu. Awards will be announced October 24, 2003.

IU established the program in the fall of 1999, with a gift of $1,000,000 from Ameritech (now SBC) to support five years of program activity. Since then, four rounds of funding and awards averaging $15,000 have made possible 42 innovative projects on IU campuses, according to Brad Wheeler, Associate Dean for Teaching & Learning Technologies. Wheeler directs the program for the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and UITS Division for Teaching and Learning Information Technologies.

"The role of faculty innovators as mentors is essential," said Wheeler. "Fellows partner with the campus teaching and learning centers in advising other faculty about incorporating technology into teaching and learning. Fellows also contribute to an online repository of good practices, which faculty across the university can use as a resource for their own work." (The repository can be found at sbcf.iu.edu/goodpract/.) Fellows will showcase their work and discuss their projects at the third SBC Fellows Summer Leadership Forum, to be held June 6, 2003, at the IUPUI University Library.

The complete RFP, proposal cover sheet, and information about previously funded projects are available at sbcf.iu.edu. Questions should be directed to fellows@iu.edu.
