What to do in Bloomington, Oct. 16-20, 2007


Tuesday, October 16, 2007

You can spend an evening with famed writer and humorist David Sedaris, who will read from his work and tell stories at the IU Auditorium on Tuesday, October 16. Tickets are $42. Alternative Pop-Rockers Ween will play the Bluebird Nightclub in Bloomington, bringing their distinct brand of surreal and ironic rock to one of the city's most bustling live venues.

Ford-Crawford Hall will feature a Jazz Combo Concert directed by renowned jazz percussionist and Jacobs School of Music faculty member Steve Houghton. 8:30pm; admission is free.


Wednesday, October 17, 2007

On Wednesday evening, from 8-10pm, the Kirkwood Observatory will be open to the general public. At this 107-year-old observatory you can view the October night sky through the 0.3 meter refracting telescope. Admission is free, and no reservations are necessary.

Band director Stephen Pratt will lead his Wind Ensemble in concert at Auer Hall, at 8pm on Wednesday, October 17. Admission is free.


Thursday, October 18, 2007

Progressive bluegrass trio Nickel Creek will play the Bluebird Nightclub on Thursday, at 9pm. Tickets are $25.

For those interested, the formal inauguration ceremony with academic procession—for IU's 18th president, Michael A. McRobbie—will take place at 3pm, in the IU Auditorium. A concert will follow at 8pm, featuring celebrated pianist Andre Watts, with David Effron conducting the orchestra.


Friday, October 19, 2007

Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello will play at Assembly Hall on Friday night at 7pm. Tickets, if they are available, are between $30-55.

Folk singer Greg Brown will perform at the Bluebird Nightclub on Friday at 7pm.

The 49th Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally will begin at 5:30pm in downtown Bloomington.

There are several options for local and nearby dramatic productions. The Brown County Playhouse—located in the quaint tourist destination of Nashville, Indiana only 20 miles from Bloomington—will feature Neil Simon’s Tony-nominated comedy Plaza Suite on October 19 at 8pm and on the Saturday, October 20, at both 3pm and 8pm. Tickets are $20. On campus, IU Bloomington’s Wells-Metz Theatre will host a production of Tom Stoppard’s play The Real Thing. Shows will run on October 19 and 20, at 7:30pm. Tickets are $16.


Saturday, October 20, 2007

On Saturday morning, you’ll find the Bloomington Community Farmer's Market, with lots of local vendors selling produce, fresh-baked bread, homemade food, and various wares. From 9am until 1pm.

The IU football team will host Penn State University in this homecoming game at Memorial Stadium at 12pm.

The Van Buren Fire Department hosts its annual Chili Cook Off and Dinner, at the Monroe County Fairgrounds, starting at 3pm.

Bear's Place Bar offers its Saturday night Comedy Caravan, with shows at 7:30pm and 10:15pm.


Museums, galleries and exhibitions:

The Kinsey Institute presents “Kinsey Confidential”, an exhibit that addresses commonly asked questions about sexual health and behavior, and answers and illustrates them using artworks, photographs, objects, and print materials from the Institute’s extensive art and library collections.

The Monroe County History Museum's show, “The Civil War and Monroe County,” includes numerous artifacts from that time period, from photos and keepsakes, to uniforms, muskets and bullet-struck relics. A simultaneous exhibit includes a similar look at World War II.

A number of shows at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures on North Indiana Avenue spotlight art and culture from Turkish shadow puppets to historical images of Native Americans and a survey of various containers from Africa.
