Gaining access to the IU network at data rates greater than 56 Kbps is rapidly
becoming a priority for many members of the IU community. Up to three ISP/vendor
provided alternatives have become available in some IU campus locations. These
advanced remote access technologies include cable modems, DSL service,
and satellite Internet services. It is the goal of the Telecommunications Division
of UITS to facilitate access to and use of these advanced methods for remote access
as an important alternative to traditional telephone modem dialup. To that end
UITS is committed to:
Developing vendor relationships that would be advantageous to members of
the IU community
Brokering access services between the members of the University community
and the vendors to provide the best possible services at the best possible
of pricing
Developing peering relationships with these vendors, to maximize
the value of IUs commodity Internet connections i.e., to find
ways to route IU-direct traffic from the vendors to the IU network without
requiring a pass-through the congested commodity Internet links.
