Testing your IUPUI data jack

The following information assumes that your datajack is active. To find out if your office data jack is activated contact one of the following:
  • Your Local Support Provider or,
  • UITS Support Center (274-HELP) or,
  • Network Operations Center (274-7788)

    Testing your data jack

The Ethernet cables used at IUPUI are unique in design. The correct type of cable has four wires and eight conductor jacks. The end of the cable that you will insert into the wall data jack is blue; the end of the cable that you will insert into your computer's CPU is clear (has no color).

  • If your data jack (the RJ-45 data plug or connector that resembles a modular telephone line plug) is inserted a fraction of an inch too far, the connection may work intermittently or not at all. The best way to insert the plug is to push in until the locking tab "clicks" and then pull back slightly.
  • Try swapping your station cable with another, "known good" station cable. If available, try connecting a "known good" computer to the data jack. If the data jack and station cable have no problems, contact the support center.
