Gerald L. Bepko Student Internship Program
2011-2012
IT Training Assessment Intern
(Internship filled)
Project overview:
Assist with the evaluation and/or creation of computer skills assessment tools and strategies that could be used by the IU community to determine their skill level in specific technologies and applications and help them identify appropriate training resources and opportunities to improve their skills.
The selected candidate will research the current scholarly literature on assessment tools and strategies, assess commercial and public domain placement tests that are currently on the market, identify the tools and strategies other universities and organizations are using, and perform cost/quality comparisons to determine whether it makes most sense for IT Training to use 3rd party tools, develop tools in house, or a combination of the two. This intern will make cost and efficacy comparisons, gather examples of various formats and types of tests in use currently, and gather other relevant data so that this information can be reviewed and analyzed by IT Training professional staff members.
Description of duties:
- Researching, comparing, and contrasting commercial and public domain computer skills assessment tools that are currently on the market.
- Compiling results of this research so that it can be shared with IT Training professional staff.
- Reviewing of scholarly articles to find out what the research says about third party assessment tools versus in-house assessment tools.
- Gathering examples of assessments that are used by other universities and organizations.
- Designing and developing prototype(s) of assessment tests that could be used by IT Training.
- Developing assessment tests that could meet IT Training's needs.
Qualifications:
The position would be ideal for a student in the School of Education with coursework or experience in creating placement tests or evaluating assessment tools and strategies, but is open to anyone with good computing skills who is creative, well organized, and has a genuine interest in technology and assessment.
